If you read the bible it says that Jesus founded a church on Peter.
If you believe in Jesus Christ you must then accept the religion he founded which is traditional Catholicism(pre Vatican 2).
In order to be Protestant, you must inherently believe that Jesus Christ made a mistake in founding his church because you believe that he and all of the "Christians" got theology wrong until Martin Luther.
