I used to work in sales. Sales is a racket. 100 phone calls is not uncommon, this is high pressure, boiler room sales.

Sales is the most exploitative industry out there. People are squeezed for every ounce of energy they have for the ultimate carrot on a stick show.

>Get the same or lower base salary than average office staff
>Or get paid no base salary what so ever
>100% commission jobs are basically scams, you pay to build someone elses' business
>On Average, make a little bit more than the average office worker
>They say its "your" book of business, when in reality, it's the company's
>Work your fucking ass off, x10 harder than the average office worker, get paid a little bit more
>Stay overtime, dont get paid for it
>Expected to stay overtime
>There is a constant noose around your neck called your "quota"
>Every day is a mindless grind just like any other office job, but with x10 pressure
>Go home every day not knowing if you'll keep your job unless you're a top performer
>Deal with other salespeople that you are technically directly competing with
>Work your ass off to build someone else' business

I'm gonna repeat this, salespeople are exploited the most because they are putting in so much energy to build someone elses' business. They pitch it to you like its your business, but it is the company's business, you're just their bitch.

this is a scam bro. You don't understand finance, in order to make money you have to provide something nobody else is.

Money is currently the cheapest in history, especially at scale. By "investing" you are providing nothing but money. There is absolutely no reason to get to normies to get a few thousand a time. If they could get 8-15% returns they would call up a billionaire or a bank and borrow the money.

Cold calling is a joke, this is coming from a salesperson that used to do it. It's for boomers. And I did sales for around 5 years. Boomer mentality, churn and burn, they figure they can throw you into a labor camp, pay you peanuts or no base at all, and see what you can scrunge up on the phones...

But a good business would handle their automated marketing correctly, salespeople are needed to assist in educating customers on the product and streamlining the close.

Outbound hunting is really a combination of very smart sniping via Linkedin and emailing/Linkedin messaging. Any salesperson worth his salt knows this is the way to go.

Cold calling 100's of people a day, a fucking joke, just slave work, brute force, a joke and totally ineffective

You make some good points, but you can sometimes find commission-based sales jobs that aren't rip-offs where you actually DO own your own book of business as an independent contractor, and i much prefer these to working in a typical wagecage. Sometimes you can even work from home. But yes, it is more work if you actually want to be successful.

>> No.17378634

I would choose boring office work over sales any day of the week. If you're a top salesperson, sure you can make good money..."good" money....the average salesperson in your office probably makes 20-40% more than the average office worker pulling in $50k.

But is it worth the cost to your health and sanity? Not worth it. I'd rather take a boring office job, low stress job, company man, over sales. Do you want to be stuck in sales forever? Eventually salespeople burn out, in fact you'll burn out quicker than you think. Plus with office jobs, you can move up in rank, become a manager, a director, and make more money that way.

Salespeople are working their asses off, staying overtime, dealing with the pressure of a quota, and then you have Directors, Senior managers, making just as much money, for less stress. Its a fucking joke.

In my time in a sales job, my health suffered and I went home every day worrying if I'll keep my job. Not worth it at all.

Honestly the best work you can do, besides doing your own business is being employed by the government.

> sometimes find commission-based sales jobs that aren't rip-offs where you actually DO own your own book of business as an independent contractor
Thats a rarity. Total rarity. Theres a reason why I can open up Indeed, Zip recruiter and find 100's of 100% commission jobs. Its a RACKET. It's cheap labor. You dont have to pay them anything. No benefits, no salary, NOTHING. All the salespeople do everything on their own dime.

I mean, its almost criminal.

>But yes, it is more work if you actually want to be successful.
It's like that with anything. But if you spend your energy building someone else' business in 100% commission, all I can do is LMFAO at you. You might as well put that kind of energy into your own business.

I am a seasoned NYC sales exec who is currently thinking of leaving their company and going to a new one. Here’s what I’ve learned:
-Skip commission-only jobs, most are scams unless you know your industry (for example you’re a freelancer making blueprints and instead want to just sell them to clients for an agency and let them do all the work leaves you $1k-10k per sale without anything past the close)
-High base salary $60-90k plus commissions roles don’t need people like the Cardone trained guys. They need people who can do discovery calls, educate their prospects and basically lube their asshole up so you can push a sale into it sometime in the future.
-All the $30-60k base salary jobs with UNLIMITED EARNING POTENTIAL basically expect you to do 100-150 cold calls a day, they care more about how many closes you get instead of the revenue each close amounts to. This is where the Grant Cardone courses might work for you because you’re basically on a 1-call close pressure.

Personally, I think I’m done with sales and pivoting to something else because I spent too much time doing the Grant Cardone way and that shit WEARS YOU THE FUCK OUT after years of cold calling and now I’m not relevant to the bigger picture sales market of lubing, massaging and sliding a sale up your prospects cavities. You also end up being the “snake oil salesman” to all your friends and family because this is what’s embedded into your personality.

I’m here for any questions about sales or NYC or whatever.

I'm a technical sales account exec in the specialty chemicals industry, entirely b2b. Got into it about 5 years ago after doing labwork and had to learn how to talk to people again - ended up being surprisingly good at it. Like you said, if you want to be valuable to the company you have to do discovery work, especially in data-centric operations that not only maintain CRM but monetize that data as is so often the trend now. Sales is about rapport and listening. The talking is more about encouraging your contact to speak than educating them, although that is also important.

What are your thoughts on this cold calling script bullshit? I can't imagine that would work worth a damn. In fact, I often frontload conversations with inactive clients by emailing a peronalized script email that is similar to what they're wasting phone time on.

But doing it on a Sunday, pressuring the rep to close 3 in one day, pretty ridiculous. I had to do that for Paycom back in the day. Set 3 appts or you don't get hired. That kind of attitude shows you how they treat their salespeople. Very few survive.

The "best" sales jobs are the ones that were previously mentioned as an account executive, educating and lubing up clients for a sale. But even those positions are all high pressure and exploitative.

Cold calling scripts are great for training but unless you’re on a first-call close type of business, it’s really just a guide for typical points to cover. After 100 conversations, all that info on the script should be in your head. Sounds like you’re in a great position and should probably start shopping yourself around softly, you’d be surprised that you could double your salary by just talking casually with leaders from similar companies. Just brag about how many sales and clients you deal with (*this becomes your book of business illusion*)
I am quickly learning that my annual $120k OTE (on track earnings) could’ve easily been achieved years ago basically being a NEET by doing engineering bootcamps. Shit, Chainlink is easily paying $100k+ for you to work from wherever the fuck you want and contribute to their ecosystem.

Also for everyone telling me to get out of NYC, I do just that. Worked remotely doing sales in other parts of US and Europe but if you haven’t lived in NYC for at least 5 years you won’t understand the attraction to it fully. Plus, it’s safe to say that it’s basically the center of the US when it comes to anything happening including jobs. Texas is absolutely becoming the next big thing and getting a lot of San Fran and NYC transplants but I’ll be honest that their weed laws prohibit them from booming as they should with their influx.

NYC is actually affordable if you’re not coming with a family and a bunch of requirements and if you want to network, you have 20+ business related MEETUP.com events daily! You play it smart you can actually eat and drink 2 meals a day by doing meetups for free. (Chainlink is the perfect example of unlimited pizza and craft beers)

bit of a marketingfag me self:
>look into frank kern, he's the friendly cool relaxed version of grant cordone, but they are friends and work together. i have not even sat through a grant cordone vid but heard bad things about him or i just get a bad vibe from him
>learn about digital marketing...funnels. how can you get more MQLs vs SQLs. learn about data analytics...the free and entry-level one is google analytics but adobe has their own version too
>learn about salesforce, CRMs, etc.
>get linkedin premium or fuck around with the free trial if you can't afford it
>obviously b2b is what we're talking about so learn how to prospect and talk to "decision makers"
>avoid cold calling, like others have said it's bitch work, bottom of the totem pole shit. as a very shitty example look at imatrix and how they sell websites and online marketing by cold calling chiro/optometrists
>learn how to sell at trade shows, that's more important
>learn how to network on linkedin without coming off as a sycophant or desperate salesguy-who-needs-to-meet-his-quota-or-he-gets-fired

all of the above sounds easy but are important and challenging skills if you're not a natural at it. if you're a natural at smooth-talking people you can make $100k+ per year as a wagie but then you're already a chad so it doesn't matter how much fake&gay fiat numbers you earn because milfs will pay you to fuck.

I want to double down on this point. You shouldn’t go to California looking to be an employee. Instead, go to California if you own a business that doesn’t rely on California.
Also, absolutely do not consider California if you’re a freelancer. They have raped the freelance opportunity this year for all, so no matter what you’re going to have to start an LLC.

Another piece of BIZ advice I’ll give to anyone here in the US is to start an LLC in Delaware. You’re looking at a few hundred to start it, and anywhere from $0-200 per year to file taxes once a year. Why do I say to do this? Because it’s a business that separates you completely from yourself. So if you can offer a service of any kind to anyone else, you’re not breaching any employment contracts you have (unofficially) and the tax write offs and really great vs claiming this on your personal taxes.
It’s also a really big plus for a business to write a check to another business so they can write it off too. You can also do many DBA (doing business as) unless your LLC for just $25 per DBA extra one time fee. This way you can get paid by check to any of these DBA names and they all go into the same parent LLC piggy bank and taxes

Yeah but I care about the weather a lot, I dont have to live in the midwest in bumblefuck nowhere just to save a few gs per year, plus everything is relative in terms of location in the US. You could be happy living in Wyoming making $65k a year paying $10k in taxes and I can be happy living in Cali making $150k a year paying $30k in taxes. the only difference is the weather and atmosphere.

>free meals
free pizza and beer are great for bulking and estrogen boost which makes you more female-friendly in conversations. the future is female and so is satoshi.

>Pay 2k+ in average rent
sounds like a bargain, don't have to worry about maintenance or real estate tax
>Deal with used up gold digging roasties
roasties have looser pussies which means they can more easily pop out children. i have to have many kids to save the white race!
>Live in shit weather with freezing cold winters
just use a heater and it feels comfy-womfy
>City is dirty as fuck with rats and homeless everywhere
it's thrilling and realistic and gritty like hollywood films
>Pay an arm and a leg for taxes
taxes pay for based africans and muslims to help them become us citizens and go to college so they can become future doctors and engineers
>Get older find a used up gold digging roastie, get a million dollar house in the suburbs, still pay massive taxes
sounds better than dying alone in a wyoming cabin
>End up working all day long with typical NYC work hard culture
but there is foosball table in the breakroom and we all go out to happyhour after work!
>End up working more than people living in the South and Midwest

Surprisingly not, and I even ended up getting my very first escort later that evening, which was one of the worst sexual experiences of my life and I'm almost positive she did hard drugs in my bathroom. On her way out she even snagged some quarters I had on my dresser for laundry. Long story short, I don't think of any of this as impressive enough to be a fantasy.

You can’t deny California (metro areas) are really going through some crazy shit with drugs and homelessness but I completely agree about weather and availability of things.
California has some fake ass people though, I have spent enough time out there and made enough friends in all the circles to see there’s some karma-farming scheme out there.
NYC keeps everyone neurotic and a bit too real. People can smell someone from NYC anywhere in the world.

>Paying $30k in taxes
>He doesn't know
Anon you'll pay much more than just $30k in taxes. There is a higher % of income you will pay in Blue states. In blue states you *will* work harder for less. Take it from someone who lived in NJ and now relocated to Texas.

The cultures are just different. I dont know how to describe it. You move to a blue state, unless you work in the government, you will just work harder, the environment is not friendly towards private enterprise. It's that simple.

Down here in Texas I get to work less, for more. People can actually get by with lower tier jobs. Up in NJ you could not live on your own unless you worked a high paying white collar job, or youd have to live out in the boonies somewhere.

Over here you can actually do what you want. I find an apartment in DFW easily for $700, and I pay much less in taxes. See how that works? You are forced into a certain track in Blue states, and you work more.

Anon you sound pretty naieve desu. California is fucking lost. It's not what it used to be. People live in their trailers in Cali. Trailers. Unless you work in tech or another high paying industry, you'll get screwed in Cali.

Im from long island not quite NYC, plus i dont have any capital to start any real business. I am aiming to be an actuary which are limited to a few select locations due to it being a niche but the salary is worth it. Once I build enough capital I plan to purchase apartment complexes and other assets so I can retire early. Finding a job making $65k a year where I can smoke weed and only work 2x a week and from home and just chill margin trading crypto currencies would probably sway me though. Otherwise how are you really going to break out of the rat race we were born into? Anyone can make an average salary and smoke weed and probably never become financially free.

Done this for a living before and it's a fucking joke. Cold calling is dead and scammers ruined it. From 1970 to 1990 an honest person could sell things over the phone and get good at it and make money. Then the scams came.

Now it doesn't matter how good you are or how great the product. People don't trust cold calls and they are right not to.

However, the machine gun approach does still get a few sales. And hiring desperate idiots on commission only is cheaper than legit full scale advertising. This shit makes Cardone look like a sociopath. Which he is. This kid is set up to fail. No training, no list? That's like handing a kid a gun and going "ok now go fight a war".

Unless you have the masochistic personality to go into car or telemarketing the sales jobs I've had have been pretty chill. You’d be surprised at the amount of chads and big stacks lurking on biz. It just takes a special type of brain to read the shit on these forums on a daily basis and put it to use. FrenchBro is a perfect example that’s been around for years.
At the end of the day, you guys did the best collective investigative work on Chainlink since ICO, and a lot of it was verifiable. The memes were just there to attract people to read the words. I’ll say that the only reason I even heard of Bitcoin was 4chan in 2011. Same with Ethereum in 2014 on 4chan.
Not sure 4chan will have the same underground feel anymore though, it’s too publicized after memeing the president into their seat and if this Chainlink prophecy comes true.

That guy in the video wasn't Grant Cardone. I legit hate that dude, he can go fuck himself. One of the most smug faggots in history.

Anyway, this kind of job is never worth it. If you can't get hired on as an Account Executive find something else. Companies with this structure rarely actually promote SDRs to AEs. They get the best AEs they can, and they pay the SDRs as little as they can until they burn out after a year.

It's such a pointless role. Because if your marketing is good and your product is good you don't need to have wagies cold calling to make more money. The truth is the SDR role is really more of a marketing role. The company is paying you to get the name and basic info of your company to various businesspeople in client industries. If you manage to get a few sales, awesome, but that's why these places usually won't fire you as long as you just make requisite calls and follow the script

>> No.17381210

This is almost certainly a scammy piece of shit company.

A general rule of thumb is that anytime a business has to resort to cold-calling people, they are scammers. I wouldn't even call these people wagies. They're effectively one step above being a Multi-Level Marketing scheme and chances are they'd get shut down if authorities gave them any attention whatsoever (or they otherwise operate in such a gray areas as to be just barely legal).

The other issue is that this is unskilled labor. The dude is going in there, probably with no degree in anything important, and that's why he can only find bitchwork cold calling people. The kid is going to have to dig through a lot of shit and go through a lot of jobs to find something half-way decent.

You'd be surprised how many software companies use cold callers. Of course they want you to do research and prospect various companies but it is definitely bitchwork. It is however something common in the business world.

It's ultimately a cheap form of advertising. Paying 10 people $15 an hour to call 100 mid level or high tier decision makers can bring greater returns than spending even more money on a commercial or internet ad.

They have to call it Sales Development Rep though. Because no one would willingly take a job as telemarketer, and that's all it really is. One of the scummiest modern business practices imo
