Only moderately bullish about this.

I predicted this announcement would happen soon; etherisc has been a breadcrumb for a long time and in a recent podcast Sirgay said they would announce something insurance-related soon. It had to be either a real world large enterprise, or a shitty "decentralized insurance" startup. It was predictably the latest. I thought it would be a weather crop insurance product announcement first though because that's the use case he often references.

Now the way I see it, this PoC it by itself worthless. Etherisc is a small startup and I can only assume not generating any profit, they don't have the business and customer base the large firms generate. This is just another what if PoC and won't be adopted because there's no demand for this type of product, as of now anyway. And no demand, no adoption, no oracle requests. DeFi might be a legit market but parametric insurance for the most part is a meme, and that's because it's retail oriented. You'd have to explain to the customer purchasing a ticket why this insurance policy is trustless because blockchain and decentralized oracles, etc. on an individual basis, and for a contract that's only really worth a few hundreds dollars, in a market where the customer base doesn't trust the insurance party as a principle, regardless of the underlying infrastructure's promises. I'm not pulling this out of my ass, it's what the guy in charge of AXA Fizzy flight insurance said about his experience. And the kicker is, AXA has recently quietly shut down the Fizzy branch because it wasn't working. No one talked about it. Now ask yourself, if an insurance giant like AXA with the customer base, reputation and marketing budget at its disposal couldn't sell this product, what chances does a no name startup with no other offerings and established base has?

Having said that, bullish because it gives LINK more snowballing credibility beyond DeFi and perhaps other firms will notice and pursue.

>> No.17117339

I skimmed it. Suffice to say I'm still not bullish on this project as the WP makes no mention of how they plan to deal with frontrunning. Seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

We could have announcements like this all year of PoC's running on the fucking testnet. The reality of the situation, is link is still heavily under development and the DeFi ecosystem is holding its breath on eth 2.0 right now.

None of it will mean anything without users. How do you get normans to mass adopt microservices like etherisc? They need to already own crypto.

I want to see aesthetic, no-brain UX's for these products before I can feel bullish about adoption. That is just how the mind of the average user works.

>None of it will mean anything without users. How do you get normans to mass adopt microservices like etherisc? They need to already own crypto.
Well in AXA's case it was in fiat and it was easy to get on their website but it was still a separate product. But what they need is to make business deals to integrate directly with travel agencies and retail flight purchase platforms. No one wants to buy a flight insurance policy separately, you just want to check a little box that says "add automated flight delay insurance for 5 extra bucks yes/no" to your order checkout when you purchase. And that's the hard part obviously. How do you make the customers even aware of this? How do you negotiate with all these different flight providers to integrate this product to their offer? AXA couldn't do it.

I think something like crop insurance sounds less feasible because IoT precision for stuff like weather isn't there yet compared to an API that gives a definite yes or no answer or an exact time input, like how do you precisely make a contract with rain density, wind speed etc, but it's at least the kind of market where these firms could feasibly sell these products to their customer base.
