I heard about dividend irrelevance theory but many who endorse it as factual also say that dividends are important to an investment portfolio. Warren Buffett even says that while he likes dividends it does not matter to him if a stock pays out dividends or not.

What are they saying then? It sounds like there's something I am not getting but they seem to be saying contradictory things.

Absolute newcunt question:

If you buy in to ETFs/Indexes, are you always able to sell them whenever you want?
Like how on crypto markets you just click sell and it will sell it at the market rate.

Is it that simple for indexes/ETFs? Does anybody garuntee these funds? What if the company running it goes under? Do you just lose everything?

During market hours, yes.

If an etf you hold is liquidated you can indeed lose 100%. Don't buy shitty high risk etfs. Most recent notable etf liquidation was 2018, an inverse vix etf (shorting the vix essentially). This is rare but it happens.

>> No.16859384

>>16859349
the thing that happened to XIV cannot necessarily happen to any ETF. It happened exactly one (1) time.
XIV was an ETN that used complex futures trading voodoo to inverse the VIX. so it is like a derivative of a derivative. Telling someone new to stocks to fearful of ETFs because of the XIV thing isn't really realistic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZYHJQcLQ8k

buying ETFs or mutual funds that are not leveraged and track normal equity indices is "safe". You can lose money, even a lot of money during a market drawdown, but it is absurd to think that any set of conditions could lose all your money.

>Shareholders typically receive notification of the liquidation between a week and a month before it occurs
>The remaining shareholders would receive their money, most likely in the form of a check, for whatever was held in the ETF. The amount of the liquidation distribution is based on the net asset value (NAV) of the ETF.

You freaked me out for a second. I hold an ETF that seems entirely likely it will be closed.

that kind of liquidation is different than the XIV liquidation

if an ETF decides to close, it's just like if a company with tangible assets>debt goes bankrupt (but much quicker and more straightforward): shareholders get paid out. the ETF shares are cashed out and everyone goes their separate ways.
The only time that doesn't happen is literally one time (so far) and it involved an ETN that was trying to track the inverse of volatility, where volatility comes from futures contracts, but those futures contracts are another derivative that comes from a calculation based on options price IV... it is something that you should know about and understand eventually, but it isn't something that should stop someone from investing in 'normal' ETFs...

This is attractive to me regardless of whether or not valuation is a meme. However now that I'm comparing it to other funds it's looking like it's too heavily consumer cyclical and financial. I wanted cyclicals, but I was thinking industrial, which should have a lot of room to grow if Japanese economy picks up this year.

If you mean why might it close, it's only got 7.7 mil under assets under management. Small funds aren't very profitable so they can get closed.

They're here to stay for the next few years. Oh wait.. I didn't realize you guys were talking about GME... GME is a tough one... the tension is strong...... the bulls have a good arguement and so do the bears.... bears are thinking it's going to go straight to zero.... stocks don't just go straight to their target... right now with GME there isn't any substantial news to cause it to go much higher or even much lower... lets be real.. the business so far is kinda the way of the dinosaurs.. BUT news of new consoles could start a 1-2 year up trend esepcially with the amount of shorts.

One of the arguments is that physical games won't be a thing with next consoles but yet bulls say that people don't store a lot of games on their hard drive due to storage......

theres a lot of pros and cons to GME just gotta trade it with caution.. probably not really a trade for newbs imo...... would probably be a gamble to them if they don't know how to trade it..

Sadly, yes.. they have to innovate a bit. Move a bit more to vr/ar maybe...test in the store => take it home..provide something Amazon can't do..make it social, make it interactive. There are a lot of cool things going on in vr/ar but I wouldn't buy something like this from the get go without having tested it first. This is where gme could have advantages.. . If the new consoles really have backwards compatibility up to the first gen they could sell bundles since they still have a shit ton of old games in their inventory...buy a ps5 game get a random ps1/2/3/4 for free...financially it all could work out, it's on the management now... . Not that I care about the company in the long term...but you know..whatever drives the share price higher..I mean Rite Aid mooned on fucking ice cream.

SOXL is the answer. Face it. Semiconductors are crack in all but name. The desire for newer, faster, more is insatiable. Computers, GPUs, self-driving electric cars, AI enhanced smartphones, medical devices, microcontrollers, networking gear, machine learning, surveillance, infrastructure, military, the list is endless. No matter how many cores, how fast or efficient, demand requires bigger, faster, cheaper, better. The clamor for fresh silicon gives nary shit for national identity, creed, hue, gender, asshole virginity or other vain conceit; the multitude speaks in singular. The plea: semiconductor.
SOXL couples a single ETF entry point with the the best companies the space has to offer then pushes these already stellar returns to the limit with 3x leverage. With SOXL your economic interests are aligned with powerhouses Nvidia, Qualcomm, Intel, Broadcom, Micron, Texas Instruments, Applied Materials, et al. Real tech companies with innovative products people want, not """tech""" """companies""" pushing shitty ads. And like all leveraged ETFs, SOXL is rebalanced daily, deftly mitigating margin risks.
In the last 7 years, SOXL has exploded over 55x yet still we are early. Semiconductor growth will proceed exponentially until every viable space is saturated with it. This is a fait accompli; the sheer number of interested parties and obviously compelling outcomes make it so. The injection of increasingly compact and efficient sensors, microcontrollers, information processing and storage into everywhere and everything will be this era's seminal revolution, a revolution with SOXL holders planted firmly at the receiving end.
Stop waiting for the "pullback". Where we're going, fretting over a few dollars is meaningless. The deliberation is over; waiting is a failure mode. Now. Buy it now.

Then rest easy as multimillionaire status is assured.

Mostly, you should be clear about what a divvy means. Financially, there isn't a difference between a stock that goes up 10% and one that goes up 5% and pays you a 5% dividend. Same amount of money either way.

The difference is in what it says about the company. A company that didn't pay a dividend is keeping the money to grow itself. A company that pays a large dividend is stagnant, or at least 'mature'. It could also be the case that a company with an apparently high dividend has actually been bleeding share value and just refused to cut the dividend. So for example, if it was paying 4% last year, but it's stock price has dropped by half since then, it'll look like it's paying 8%, even though the company is clearly in trouble.

So dividends aren't the be-all-end-all.

I agree with Mr. Doubles. Dividends are the company returning some portion of earnings to its shareholders. Companies should only not pay out a dividend if they can achieve a unique and significantly higher return to its shareholders by retaining that money than if they had paid it out. If a company is only able to achieve ordinary returns, then they have no reason to keep earnings from the shareholders. Dividends are a definite amount of money paid out now, whereas any money by the company is not actually realized as a gain by the shareholders and may never be realized. Further, the supposedly re-invested earnings kept by the company may very well just be squandered and never yield any gain to shareholders. Read what Benjamin Graham has to say in the Intelligent Investor. Graham says that the vast majority of companies should pay out roughly two thirds of earnings in dividends.

Share repurchases are not always a bad use of money, but only if the company repurchases shares at a discounted price to fair value. On the other hand, even if the company does re-purchase shares at a good price, if they are doing that with money that would have otherwise gone to dividend payments, surely I as a shareholder could have just used my dividend payments to repurchase shares for myself at whatever price I saw fit. In addition, the more the company takes away from dividends to repurchase shares, the less they are reducing their dividend obligations by repurchases.

Keep in mind that sava has a bumpy road far ahead. The science behind galt is much more mature, so it's pretty much just a waiting game. The problem with sava is that it is not clear why their target has this altered conformation in the first place. If it is caused by bacteria, then crtx is a very powerful contender against sava. Why does writing puts puts beat covered calls?
In both cases, I cap my upside in exchange for a fixed gain/higher leverage. How can one be more profitable than the other? And why isn't the following strategy guaranteed win?
>short covered calls

(= sell puts, buy calls, short stock)
(= short stock, synthetic long stock)
(= positive risk-free return)
