An age old question
Managing risk is the most difficult of all tasks
The way I deal with it is to assume the worst case scenario and prepare accordingly. Of course you strive for the best case outcome while constructing contingencies to account for worst case outcomes.
The way to do this is to always have an escape or backup plan. Oftentimes, having several redundant topologies in your work minimizes risk to a manageable level.
Rushing, skipping steps, taking shortcuts and other manners of laziness are a guarantee of failure.
