16633209 No.16633209 [Reply] [Original]

“Reading an entire book in a matter of hours may seem daunting, but it all comes down to simple math. The average adult reads around 200–400 words per minute. The average novel ranges between 60,000 and 100,000 words total. If your reading speed is right in the middle of the pack at 300 words per minute, and you’re reading a middle-of-the-pack novel at around 80,000 words, you’ll be able to knock it out in around five hours or less.”

80,000 page texts that you can read in five hours are not worth your time

I have a difficulty internalizing and comprehending what I read. I often end up indirectly skimming the page and not remembering what I just read. I think I have ADHD.

Ideally you shouldn’t be reading shit that doesn’t make you pause to think. What you describe is equivalent to jamming as many hot dogs as you can down your gullet as quickly as you can.

seems like total bullshit
nobody reads at this speed and actually processes what they're reading
just acknowledging the word without considering it is a waste of time

I have a very boring, gotta be there in case something goes wrong (it rarely does), kinda job. So I read. There is burn out. Read fiction for a while, get tired of all the tropes, realize how rare good authors truly are and how they often have only a handful of good books in them before they lose it, run out of ideas, make too much money and lose the passion for it. Switch to non fiction, crime and military history and invention/tech history. Get burned out on that too. It's a cycle. I'm just getting back in to it now after a year break.

>> No.16633858

“Reading books” is just an outdated way of saying “acquiring information.” Someone who reads zero books but 5-10 intelligent online articles is better off than someone who just reads Harry Potter all day.

It's pointless to just read like that Tbh. You need to marinate over the content slowly not just speed read thru shit books and put them on the shelf like a pseudo intellectual trophy to act all pretentious.

I read once book in 5h, it was more than 500 pages long, but it was enjoyable read in a world of science-fantasy with world based a bit on platonian philosophy.

Now when I could read would be around 21:00/22:00, assuming no sex with wife. Reading hard technical texts after this hour and being salaried worker is kinda difficult.

I read science/math/cs textbooks and I have to stop to take notes, do the examples, figure out wtf I'm reading, etc. Can't remember the last time I read a storybook for pleasure but that's time I could be spending expanding my knowledge, so I can't bring myself to do it.
I have so many notes on so many programming languages, graphical animation, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, etc. THERE'S TOO MANY FUCKING THINGS TO LEARN AND I'M REALLY STARTING TO LOSE MY SHIT
