30k used to be enough to buy you a house in the early 00s. now it doesnt anything. barely even groceries. a lot of people are not really aware of how bad things have gotten

Yeah. And STEM is a meme too. I was making 60-70K with my degree. But you get all these larps saying how easy it is to make 100K,200K with a STEM degree. Or maybe they just live in Cali/NY, whereas I live in a low cost city where rent is 1K/month.

I live in bumfuck central PA and 22k is enough to live on while saving. Granted you're gonna be cooking damn near every meal, driving a 3k Civic or other econobox you repair yourself, and having a roommate. 30k would be the bare minimum for something resembling a middle class life here.

I make 65K with my mech engineering degree. For 1 year, I was making over 100K by working in the oilfield (not worth it) and there are jobs that I qualify for which also pay roughly 100K but I'd have to live in Seattle or NYC or something and work much longer hours (even more not worth it).

Based decision. If you factor in the seattle rent and taxes..there goes your additional 35k
