Pretty much this, it doesn't contribute much to our economy to keep the small town alive.

What it will have a massive negative effect on is the nation's identity. This is going to start the push of everyone into cities, and once all of our populations are heavily concentrated specific identities will develop in the city clusters. These clusters won't get along and will eventually compete/fight heavily. Might not be a war but America as we know it will be dead.

Not that guy, but you don't seem to be getting it, so let me lay it out for you. The primary reason they will never have truly driverless vehicles aside from one-off boondoggle projects like the Paris Line 14 for proof of concept age-of-the-future headlines, is because of liability. When something crashes, is stolen, blows up, kills someone, or is attacked by squatter hobbits, someone has to be responsible, and because of the hilariously unrefined nature of our law code and current hard limits on AI technology, there's no precedent for any machine on this planet being able to take responsibility - true responsibility - for an action or a decision.

As far as we're aware, machines can't even truly make a -decision- in the first place aside from how they're coded or the data that they've absorbed, and that makes liability really tricky. Theoretically, any problem could automatically be the fault of the company that owns the machine, but then it'd be a hard sell for employers who would be placing the future of their business interests (and possibly being sued for everything they own) in the hands of a hackable, trackable machine that can't be reasoned with or intimidated or persuaded into compliance like a person. Next thing you know, the machine goes off the reservation, runs over 15 people because destroy all humans, and you no longer have a truck, or a trucking company.

You could put all the fault on the business that made the machine, but then there's no incentive for the businesses to make the machine in the first place and you've basically shut down droid manufacturing before it starts by making them retroactively liable for every mistake those machines make in the future.

Basically, there always needs to be a person in there so that we have someone to blame, not so that the person can continue to be competant. Our system doesn't work when something breaks, everyone asks whose fault it is, and there isn't anybody there in the first place.

the incentive would be to make robots or programs that function with such lower accident rates finding the blame doesn't matter because the accident repair costs would be cut down to 2% of what they are now. If an accident does occur it will probably be much easier to determine blame, as its either on the robot manufacturer (robot broke/coding was bad), or on the owner (maintenance wasn't performed). I bet certain companies will have warranties as well.

The robot arm has been around since 1980 and has been worked on for the past 40 years. We're getting to the point were robots are so much better than humans its laughable.

I think the real problem is that right now when a truck runs someone over, a human being goes to prison. It's not a perfect system, but people are generally willing to accept that as justice. What happens when it's a truck driven entirely by a computer? Cash payouts. And over time those will shrink. Eventually you will have to sign a mandatory arbitration agreement with your google-owned DMV when you apply for a license that says you will automatically go into mediation if your loved ones are murdered by an AI truck.

I am a naive optimist and I think it won't be this bad.

Yes these jobs will disappear in the end, but hopefully there will be a while to transition so this can happen gradually.

Like with any new technology it will be imperfect and expensive. Due to the cost it won't be immediately widespread enough to put lots of people out of work and due to imperfection, it will most likely still require some amount of human guidance and monitoring. Add to this that it will take laws 5-10 years to catch up to the technology, even if it is near-perfect.

The positive sides of automation are that it will ultimately bring down the costs of everything. Shipping something will eventually be a fraction of the price it currently is. As well as bringing down the costs of goods that everyone needs/wants, this will also help businesses grow and open up job opportunities in other places. This will ultimately create more wealth for everyone.

The still have built in drive wheel and break paddles in them.
There will be law saying that a human would be required to be in it much like how everyone needs to own a car insurance before driving it, human will be that insurance.

When you have 50% of world wealth you don't need more money, you need to make the world conditions such that it is very hard for other people to come out of nowhere and eclipse your wealth. There will never be another Larry / Sergey type Google story. The playing-field no longer exists. Crime, Regulation and cost of living has increased, so it is harder to start and run a new business

Automation is just another tool that is being used like other social reforms (immigration, crime, pension age) to achieve wealth suppression.
