I think the thing that everyone is overlooking is the "Demo" that Chainlink will be hosting at Google HQ on the 18th. Now ask, what is Google building with BigQuery.

Total Return Swap is a Dapp design that allows Chainlink node operators to hedge the price volatility of the LINK token while it’s staked as collateral during node services. Nodes that want to reduce their exposure to price movements can sell that risk to a counterparty as a synthetic asset tied to the value of the LINK token. Nodes collect interest on the synthetic token loan, while the counterparty obtains leveraged synthetic exposure to LINK.

i dont understand, how does the buyer actually get exposure to LINK? is synthetic LINK (sLINK?) minted that is tradeable in a marketplace? or is their "exposure" the obligation to sell back to the node operator at market price when the swap expires? someone explain for a brainlet

It requires the node operator and the buyer to both stake additional LINK in a separate contract. If = LINK dumps, node operator gets LINK out of the swap contract and covers their losses
If LINK = moons, buyer gets LINK out of the contract as if they had a leveraged position.

What's more notable than this functionality itself is the fact that people can literally create novel financial instruments (in this case functional options contracts) at fucking hackathons. Over a single week.
Think about what this means when this industry is established and people are building novel financial instruments at the rate they currently make smartphone apps.
Then imagine being a national regulator trying to put a leash around this shit. Impossible.

Basically node operators staking LINK also going to short LINK so that the effect of scarcity induced by staking on LINK price gets completely neutralized. Thanks guys, you totally ruined the only premise of the token which was already questionable! Hope the $1000 prize was worth it...
