Some people always expect more opportunities and want to take advantage of them. Sometimes that means closing doors to open new ones.

there are different kind of returns.
If a stock pays a 10% dividend yield, but the price is flat, you get !0%-cap gain tax every year.
If a stock appreciates by 10% every year (but pays no dividend), you don't have to pay taxes until you sell. So you don't have to take the small hit to your compounding every year, and you perform better in the long run.

If you buy the Russell 1000 (or another index), you have a good shot of achieving 10% annual returns pre-tax over the long term. But it won't all be in dividends.

It is much more important to consider dividend growth over dividend yield. There are stocks that you can buy right now that will pay you 10% yearly... for the next couple quarters, until they cut the dividend. There are also stocks out there RIGHT NOW that either pay a small dividend or no dividend, that will be paying a 20% yield vs their current cost in 10 years. The important thing is to NOT consider the instantaneous, right-now dividend yield too much, because the long term returns are dependent on many other things.

So I just talked with a friend that works for Citi and we casually got on the topic of US elections (because of the voting that happened today). According to him his entire department along with some contacts he has at other banks, they're going to short the entire US market in 2020 if a radical like Warren gets elected.
You will see a massive downturn in the markets a few days before the election depending on data, if Trump gets ousted we will see another late 2018 in 2020 and in 2021 it's just flat-out crazy.

They have already started shorting certain sectors of the market and from his knowledge, some progressive billionaires are leading the charge at one or two US banks because their entire operations are under threat from Warren (Bernie is not even remotely a threat so I guess he's a pawn to rally young progressives to the dems like we saw in 2016).

If you DCA mindlessly like the boomer magazines suggest, you'll regret it and the dividends will barely be worth it. I was somewhere in between that. Closed out a big position in profit yet I get the vibe robinhood is showing inaccurate numbers. I remember reading that the premium is given over time rather than immidiately deposited. Sold puts at about 0.13. Closed them at 0.02 and somehow cant shake the feeling that they may have a bug screwing me over.
