Because it never was about ideology, it was about how connected you are to the rest of the globe. The configuration, i.e national ideology, is only a small boost on top of the baseline functionality, but to achieve that baseline functionality you need the same blood supply, or capital circulation, that's also running to the rest of the nations. You can be a 3rd world muslim shithole and have a massive economy because your oil made you a capital highway, you can be the same version but way poorer because America decided to sanction you and to force everyone else to not trade with you. Ideology played zero affect in that case, it was all about who wants to trade with you or not.

Now take the above and apply it to Eastern Europe. An alliance of 50 years where it was all exclusively trading with itself while being embargoed by the West, then suddenly that exclusive privilege of trading across itself randomly disappears and no similar substitution is ever offered by anyone else up until the EU. Of course that these economies would rot to their death in such a scenario while everything relevant will be invented & produced in the rest of the interconnected world. It's not about communism, slavs or anything - it's about unfortunate geopolitics, in the same way that isolationist China is a shithole poorer than India while interconnected China is a world power.
