The problem is that slavery never ended, it just went dormant and then slowly crept back in to society bigger and badder than ever. They sort of did the same thing with the Holocaust. There's this historical highly emotional event or period of time that you basically deify and have a spotlight on 24/7 which allows you to get away with pretty much anything because you can always hold the event out in front of you like a shield and make the people calling you out feel bad. In the case of slavery, because people aren't getting whipped and because they have the technical freedom to quit their jobs, you're not a slave. Perfectly in consistent with them. But of course you're not a slave, because that's unethical and unethical things are bad when they aren't state or elite sanctioned. What happens though when a minority of people controls every institution and policy making organization and then calibrates everything in such a way that for every $5.00 you make it takes $6.00 to live and they loan you the extra $1.00? What happens if you manage to beat them at their game? Want a wife? They might not be able to get to you, but they can get to her, and through her, they can shatter you by 50%. Money in the markets? This. It's more of an escalation of absurdity potentially due to an imposition of exceedingly orderly constraints on what formerly was a chaotic system. Excessive consolidation of power and influence which strangles society's self-direction and natural evolution. The world seems less spontaneous and organic and more directed and controlled. Human beings can inherently pick up on this for some reason which is why we all "feel" it and the idea resonates so much. People on the left don't think The Patriot Act or Facebook having advertisements pop up based on conversations you had with people and still having Facebook and companies like them deny it is odd? They don't think Donald Trump becoming president is odd? They don't think the presidential candidates of the past 3 decades coming more or less from all the same families and social circles is strange? They don't think $150,000 medical bills in a society where a significant portion of the population has less than $25,000 to their name are bizarre? They don't think lesbians being called bigots for not sucking a transgender person's girl penis is maybe a little off? The concept of a Clown world is neither left or right and that's what makes it even worse quite frankly. It adds to the legitimacy of the phenomenon which we could otherwise just dismiss as the delusions of some small subset of the population.
