I dont think I have seen a single MTG thread on this board. This game has made me crazy money on buying booster boxes and flipping them and speculating on single cards and flipping them for a profit later on. The MTG economy keeps growing and is far larger and robust than YuGiOh and Pokemon by far and all the other shitty meme TCG's like Force of Will.

/biz/ is to discuss everything business and finance related but its 99% crypto and gold/silver meme posts. So instead lets discuss cardboard paper cards.

What do see in MTG's and Wizard of the Coasts (owner) future? For Modern Horizons, War of the Spark, Core 2020, Throne of Eldraine, other past sets and blocks, upcoming single specs you have on cards. What are your recent profits or loses? What is in your collection?

My wife has a shit ton of mtg cards.
I downloaded the tcgplayer app, scanned a few and I'm looking at $1100 in value.
Can I actually get this much money for these things? The wife doesn't play with them anymore, she just hodls.
Why are these pieces of paper worth so much?

MTG has been around since like 93, its the most played card game in the world, nothing comes close. Even amateur shit tournaments yield hundreds of thousands in prize money and the pro events are in the millions. Hasbro/WotC make tons of money on this thing.

If her cards are values at 1100 with tcgplayer, I assume its their buy prices so yes minus shipping etc you would get $1000, you can get more if you sell yourself online on Ebay or something and want to take the risk with dealing with buyers. Or try Cardkingdom, their buylists are a bit higher. Or sell locally at a card shop.

What cards are they?

>> No.15727828

I have tons of old mtg cards, are they worth anything? Stuff like alpha commons, signed rare cards from early editions, etc. Is there any price chart for rare old cards?

that would probably be hearthstone. or atleast they have aroung 8x the amount of people in reddit/twitch that mtga has. and i doubt many of the active physical card game players dont have mtga

the 90's and 2000's are over. books-a-million and gamestops are fadeing away where you would typically play these. physical card games are dying. its time to get in to digital card games that give actual ownership of the cards you buy op

Might be hard if you dont play and cant tell what cards will be strong in modern legacy standard EDH and so on but when new sets come out you can preorder single cards for dirt cheap in hopes they go up in value once people see the card is strong, same with buying foils. Its more short term gains but some for long term hodls. Boxes are more for long term flipping since most boxes dont drop in value, some do though. You can also short term flip boxes.

>No one cares about digital garbage. Paper magic is king.

hmmm lets see
>for every 1 authentic there is 1000 fakes
>the most valuable/rare cards cant even be used in gameplay because of the risk of damage and wear lowering the value
>you have to actually find someone who will play with you, who's deck is not considerably weaker or stronger than yours and is an equally good/bad player to give you a fun time and challenge
>power creep making older gen cards worthless in competitions due to the developers trying to make their newest selling generation more in demand and keep cost of entry and being competitive down
>no rebalance. if a card is demed to strong after release or used in a way the developers didnt consider, its just outright banned instead of rebalanced
>has to go to the store or order packs online
>has to fly to the otherside of the world to participate in a tournament
>has to take a dicking when trying to sell them for multiple reasons much like you stated here: >>15727455
>no way to track who's owned what cards, if you wanted a card from a tournament winners deck they would have to deface it or pay a grader to confirm
>cards condition is objective and a grader who disagree's with what you believe its grade is could cost you a fortune on a risky buy

need i go on? something big is coming to wreck the TCG world

finally a good fucking thread.
haven't flipped mtg decks that would net me anything good yet, but have recently started looking into trading cars decks after an awesome flip. Android netrunner out of print deck go for at least 80 to 90 depending on which deck. Bought a Sovereign Sight oop deck on goodwill website for 20 and flipped for 80. Pokemon decks from early 2000s ate also good if they are sealed and specific events.
Just got into flipping some handheld consoles too. Bless you OP.

What skill level/ investment do you need in order to turn a profit doing this?

I assume the people that make the most money off MtG trading play the game a lot to know which combos are viable in any given meta.

I never really got into the competitive scene, I prefer playing kitchen table games with fun goofy combos with friends, which I think there is a healthy secondary market for.

You have to get pretty deep into the scene to make money speculating on cards, and you have to be consistently making enough to let it take over your life that much.

It's like any micro-economy: you can milk it for profit, but it's going to be a big part of your life to do it meaningfully.

Drown in the Loch about 25 of those for under a dollar each now at almost $4 each, $10 for foils. Emry was a good choice but shes getting banned fast. Fabled Passage was a missed opportunity for me.

I'm an avid player and have quite the collection but I'm thinking of trying to flip a profit now. I think I have a good idea of what will be a high demand single or set. Currently just holding Modern Horizons though.

I think this is a good time to get in. With the release of these deluxe collector edition products I believe the game will only grow. With Wizards basically neutering Historic as a potential paper format, Modern seems like the best investment. Sealed special seasonal sets are a safe bet but what are your specs on certain singles? I should've flipped my leyline of the voids before the reprint.

If you mean Eldraine collector packs and boxes, dont. The packs have been opened in some videos on youtube including by MTG themselves on twitch and the pulls are trash, mostly commons. But there are idiots who will pay premium prices for anything so maybe itll still do well but remember a box of 12 collector packs original price was $250, and is now gouged to $350 to $400 with the special collector box by MTG with the uncut sheet and artwork etc is $450.

For singles I did recently with Eldraine. Drown in the Loch, Mystic Sanctuary, Midnight Clock all foils. Murderous Rider was one I missed, Fabled Passage also. Emry is a big one but people already want it banned. It will turn into another Hogaak soon.

Modern Horizons is good hold but its called MH1 by Wizards so expect a Modern Horizons 2 in 18 months or so. Who knows how it will affect MH1. Take the crown conspiracy 2 made conspiracy 1 drop in price (though still expensive) but its a different situation. MH2 may suck while MH1 stays strong.

Scan all her cards. Bulk sell cards under $5, everything over $5 sell as singles. Cardkingdom has the highest buy list but they grade harshly. Cash offers are lower than store credit but you can buy boxes today to hold for years or buy dual lands and Alpha/Beta/Unlimited set cards or buy other reserve list stuff.

It has to be a passion, for new cards you just have to be better at evaluating cards and purchasing them when they are cheap/ undervalued and then use them to buy/ trade for other undervalued cards later on.

I dont do it anymore but I made a bunch roughly a decade ago timing the market with commander and other eternal formats (and reserve list cards) skyrocketing.

Years ago I was considering make investments on mtg but you need to open a company to avoid taxation and get suppliers to sell the booster packs. WotC controls the quantity of rare cards and they can dilute the value upon the profit they want to makes. Gives alot of work because you need to pay attention to the market, deck build, future implementations...
In effort/return don't see short and long therm gains, because more and more people use digital card because is a win win for the company and for the player (even if you can't trade any card justifying with the commodity to wherever you like)
