I like who I am and I enjoy the feeling of knowing there's only one me, physically, with consciousness that I have. I don't believe there's anyone out there in the world, or ever has been, that thinks literally the exact same thoughts that I think. I like that everyone is unique in their own way, and brings something unique to life as a whole.

Why would I want to destroy that line of thinking with ego death? Am I misunderstanding it?

On the topic I found ego death to be a double edged sword. The problem with it is that you just don't fit in with society anymore, you basically just want to drop out. Not bad in and of itself, but the problem is your ability to make money and sustain romantic relationships with women absolutely plummets and you become unmotivated to engage in politics. Again theoretically fine but what it really means is a life where people look down on you and will easily take advantage of you. I have been working very hard for several years to actually regain some of my former ego.

Your best bet for happiness is to become rich and start a family and stake your claim for a part of the world and express individuality, or become a monk/priest. An ego check is healthy and a good learning experience, but I don't believe you can both try to become wealthy and also kill your ego, you will fail at one if not both endevours.

definitely changed me. i experienced schizophrenia and insects residing in my ear canals. humbling to say the least. i think about death all the time now and i’m only more terrified. i am always acutely aware that i can die a gruesome and unforgiving death. but i fake it till i make it. i don’t regret it at all. it’s taken years but my trajectory has been looking good. i’m certainly more solitary but also more driven with my mortality breathing down my neck all the time.
