How do I make it as a contractor? I do a lot of construction work but it's mostly sub-contracting for several large companies. I make decent money but there is so much potential. How do I find clients on my own? Does online advertising work?

Figure out how to find clients then sell work to other contractors as well, it's higher margin than doing the work yourself.

The simplest way to find clients is to figure out which other businesses already have a relationship with these clients.

Then you recommend your clients to them, and they in turn recommend their clients to you.

That not always true in construction. I do literally zero advertising. The best work is just word of mouth. I vet clients and subs before accepting new work. OP just do good work, dont talk shit about people, be honest and give it time. It takes 3-5 years to build a solid reputation in a local area. But once you are in you will get the point you are turning away work.

I get a lot of referrals, but I'd prefer to have more options. I have to take on some jobs that aren't very profitable because I just don't have enough work sometimes. One job will net me like $1,000 for a day's worth of work and another will net me $200. I'd prefer to have a more consistent profit. I've been handing out business cards en masse forever, have some good relationships with clients, and have a good reputation for being fair with pricing and doing good work. I come back free for repairs, free estimates, all that crap.

Should I pay a professional marketing agency to advertise for me? I got an offer for $1,000/mo and it doesn't seem like a bad deal if it gets me a ton of work via the web.

That sounds like a real hassle. I'm fine with doing the work myself since I have a helper. Maybe down the road when I have more shekels.
