Minecraft WAS very profitable. $10,000 to $100,000 a month with infinite growth possibilities, but requires more investment initially. However, Mojang made a change to their terms of service which forced a lot of servers to shut down as it was not profitable. I assume, you'd fly under the radar if you had a small server and accepted donations directly, but I wouldn't risk it. This is just from what I've heard. Don't know how things are now.

True. I used my shekels to buy a bunch of dumbass domains and collect free shekels by AdSense. Then I use AdWords to get more people to my sites. Then with the money I make from AdSense I invest back into AdWords to get even more users and more money. Rinse and repeat. I also always keep my domains up for sale. I forget about them and sometimes get an email from Namecheap and they're like, "Someone just bought your domain for $300!" and it's a nice little gift. By the way, when you buy an already owned domain from someone they receive an email with all your personal information. Something to keep in mind if that matters.

Nothing. People donated to start the server. I just had to invest time in developing it. Garry's Mod comes with a default gamemode which you can use Lua to code whatever you want within the limits of the Source Engine. People liked having somewhere that they could interact with people they knew online instead of just typing to them or talking.

It opened my eyes to how easily you could print money. The game is still popular but I don't know how the scene is these days since I don't play video games or care, but this applies to all multiplayer communities and all that. One server owner was such a Jew he made people pay $50 for the Physgun which is essential to playing the game and almost all of them did, within time. Those that were against it eventually caved because all their friends were having fun without them.
