Think about how many recruiters they send to schools and how hard they work to keep enrollment growing forever, which of course it can't. They hire graduated students to make their employment rate look good to the feds or they lose their funding. The whole point of student loans is to keep the wagies in their cagies. It is very easy in this day and age to be NEET (though I think it's miserable) or expat, and if people start doing these things in appreciable numbers the American economy would crumble. Where do those student loan interest payments go to? They don't go to reinvest into the economy. They don't even go back to the government. In the event of forgiveness, the government foots the bill to private holders. In the event of repayment, private holders get all of the profits and interest.

When I was in grad school, the school did a cafeteria renovation and put all kinds of futuristic vending machines and bought hipster art pieces for obscene amounts, and then they furloughed the teachers for to lack of funds. I could pay for it working on the side but I'd rather save 40k and invest it in an index fund, take out student loans because no interest, and then get a nice job with a degree and use the 50k as a down-payment on a house and pay the minimum on the student loans or something in a way to get a return higher than the loan interest.

In terms of personal finance, if Joe Schmo has a $50,000 medical bill at 6% interest rate that is dischargeable and a $50,000 student loan at 3% that is non-dischargeable, both with 10 year terms, how should he prioritize paying off the loans?
Let's say he has enough income that he can comfortably pay 150% of the combined monthly required payment.

What % of his extra payment should go to the dischargeable at 6% vs the non-dischargeable at 3%???
