I'm down on that account too, but I'm not so worried about my losses in MO. your total income tax consists of w-2 and short term gains taxed at your income tax bracket rate plus the long term gains taxed at the long term gain rate you're slated for. your income tax included everything. the IRS just wants their cut of the whole pie.

if you earn too much gains (successful trader) and will end up owing over $1000 at the end of the year in tax, you'll receive a penalty if you don't pay quarterly. there's more detail to that calculation though so you need to research it yourself.

yes but to figure actual tax owed for short and long term capital gains, you need to run it through an IRS worksheet that has like 30 questions on it that determines your specific capital gains tax. if you only have short term gains and no long term gains and are not an extremely high or low earner, then it'll just be at your normal income tax rate most likely.
