14084378 No.14084378 [Reply] [Original]

Hello /biz/, I have some Ethereum on my metamask.
My PC isn't working and needs to be repaired, so I've tried to recover my wallet on another PC. But each time when I enter seed I'm getting message that it's invalid.
I don't understand how can this be, because I'm writing seed from the photo I got when created account (yes I know making photo was stupid) and I also recovered from that seed in the past when I needed to reinstall windows and all was fine. Ethereum is still on the address, no one has stolen it. And even if I got hacked, I'm sure I'd be able to restore account with seed, while hacker would stole my coins.
So how can this be? Can seed phrase somehow change without any notification? I also tried to restore from it in MEW but it neither have worked, so the problem is with the seed, not with Metamask.
What should I do?

I'm sure most of u have coins on wallets backed by mnemonic.
There is some shady shit going on with mnemonic, how could it work once and now become invalid?
What if the same thing happens to your hardware wallet for example?

>> No.14084662

If it worked before but not now, you're making some trivial error in transcribing the seed. If it's written in columns, are you reading it in rows or vice versa? Check each word is on the wordlist and that you're spelling it correctly.

>> No.14084667

is the photo of written text or is it a screenshot of typed text? is there a chance you are misreading one of the words of making a typo? that's really the only thing I can imagine it could be, or you are on some fake version of metamask but if your coins havent been stolen that's probably not it. triple check and try again

It is a screenshot of a seed phrase generated by metamask itself when I created my wallet. I don't think there's a typo, because I've made around 20 attempts on different gadgets in both mew and metamask, still getting the same error.

Well looks like they do. There is no way it is a wrong seed because I even checked the date I made a photo and day of my first transaction in etherscan.
I'll contact support, but I don't think they will give me my pennies back. Actually I can handle it, but I fear now same shit can happen with hardware wallet once I put all my life savings on it.

I would focus on what changed, since you told you're on another pc I'll check the keyboard layout in the OS settings maybe, or shit like that. I'm pretty confident the issue is machine-related, the chances are way higher than your seed words magically become invalid all of a sudden

I tried on 2 pcs and on my phone, both mew and metamask. Same error all the time.
Also tried typing words in notepad without spaces, pasting them into metamask and making spaces after that (the only suggestion I've found on metamask support forum) still not working.

my advice. buy 2 40GB SSD drives and install Lubuntu Linux on the first SSD, encrypted with LUKS and use a strong password. Backup password at a safe location, then learn it by heart. Then install Brave Browser and setup MetaMask on your fresh Linux Install. Use the second SSD to clone the first HDD, store it as backup at a safe location. Use this setup as cold storage.

Never had trouble desu

Yeah I understand that, I'd already thought that I saved wrong seed, but it worked in the past so the only possible solution is that seed changed without even notifying me, as mentioned here:

I don't think this is possible and also googled the thing without any results. Again, I think you should stop spending energy on this hypothesis and try harder with your guessing game, eventually the real problem will come up and you'll be like 'fuck me it was this shit all along kek'

>> No.14085200

Maybe the only one that it gives you but still, there's a private key somewhere in your browser app data folder ready to be recovered. But that will be tedious so better to stick with figuring out why the seed isn't working for the moment, also because it would be a shame dropping metamask for a simple lack of understanding it, you'll end up having problems with every single type of wallet in existence if you don't come up with a good understanding of its underlying tech

>> No.14085393

>>14085272
It's a dirty solution that probably won't work, you can copy the files but what about registry keys for example? Your better shot should be to temporarily swap the hard drives and hope that the shit will boot up. If it won't it's a driver problem or cpu related, in both cases you can fix it with an automated bootable disk called 'paragon adaptive restore', I don't remember if it's free or not but shouldn't be an issue to get a copy if you came this far

>> No.14085459

You are messing up a word.

>> No.14085551

However, whatever you decide to do, DON'T write on the old hard drive, DO NOT modify shit. Use it as it was read-only, that's your last ship so don't fuck it up early denying yourself the chance to give a better try when you'll come up with a greater solution. Trust me, I dealt with similar shit countless times. If you have the possibility to clone/backup the hard drive then you can do pretty much anything you want, otherwise better be still

LOL BIZ I'M AN ABSOLUTE RETARD.
I MISTYPED THE WORD 20 TIMES. MY SEED PHRASE CONTAINS ENGLISH WORD THAT IS ALSO PRESENT IN MY NATIVE LANGUAGE BUT IS WRITTEN DIFFERENTLY, SO I WAS AUTOMATICALLY MISTYPING IT. NOW I COPIED FROM DICTIONARY AND IT WORKED.

you can extract the json (usually it's stored in a json and the private key is encrypted with wallet passphrase)
unless your hard drive is encrypted of course you can recover it
buy a cheap 5$ sata->usb and mount the partition, browse the file system and retrieve the json
at this point you only needs to import it and use the wallet passphrase
