Largest retail outflow in history over the past 6 months

basically setting up a bottom, 99% of traders are complete retards, but when retail gets out in mass its almost guaranteed to be pretty major low

The thing is, the "low" was around the all time high, you know what that means. Massive blow off top incoming, S&P could double in 2 or 3 years

You can get around paying interest on keeping your short open by constructing a synthetic short. Buy 100 shares of your decaying etf, write an itm call and buy an itm put. Your position will act like a short as long as it stays inbetween the strikes, you hit max profit if it falls below your short call, and you straight up lose money if it goes higher than the price you bought the 100 shares plus credit received (or minus debit).

Obviously like real shorting, it‘s kinda a risky position to take and you only have as long as until the options expire.

Take a longer term view (these are monthly candles), you can easily see when the true bear markets where you can reap big profits from the downside are. They are very rare, your odds are better by placing longer bets on the upside.

However, you can still place bets on the downside, even though the odds are not better, but you just need to be more cautious and quicker to chop off a losing position, as its the uneven bet (long term).

You can also make use of hedging in this case, place bets on the upside while also trying your main thesis of betting on the downside (via options etc) in case things get extreme
