Loss of Masculinity isn't necessarily a physical degeneration thing. For much of history, and for many cultures, women weren't given choices as to who they married. Marriages happened to join families/form alliances, and for the acquisition of property/income.

I believe war wouldn't have actually required tall and buff men (not to say men were weak back then).
