I didn't get fired today. I got fucking screamed at and they said shit like "Why are you nervous in front of us?!?! We want to HELP you!! Let us help you!!" 100% chance I get fired the second they can find someone to replace me.

Yeah. Instead I got screamed at, literally screamed at, for 90 minutes straight. It hurts worse to be honest. They said things like "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW HARD IT IS TO FIND SOMEONE TO DO THIS JOB?!" so apparently finding a replacement who is willing to put up with them on short notice is hard. If I left today with no warning it would fuck them up for like 2 months. This is a school remember.

I am 100% quitting as soon as I can though. I have a very long list that I've consistently thought about on my 2 hour commute every single day for the past year and I am committed in this decision.
They of course had a reason to be mad at me, something I had apparently done while teaching (nothing weird or inappropriate, just a confusing way of teaching the lesson apparently that I thought would work but apparently was too challenging). But I don't actually intend to be a teacher anymore. I took this just to "get a job" because I couldn't find anything else over 5 months of looking.

Essentially they've decided to meet with me like this almost every day for the next few year, actively monitor every lesson I try to implement, keep them for records, and watch/record as many as possible. Only me, nobody else in this school. They consider themselves a really prestigious secondary school but still, this amount of stress every single day just hurts. And they have 1 really nice girl who just asks me stuff like "hey... this is probably really stressful for you huh? If you want to talk about any of it, I'm here to chat if you ever need me." It's very weird for me and it's clear this isn't a good match for me anymore.

Sorry for "reddit spacing," this is kind of a big point: The reason finding a new job is so difficult for me is because it means relocating my wife and kid and that takes some time.

For some clarity so people here don't think I'm just complaining, another coworker who's been here 4 years told me "I'm quitting this year. [our mutual boss] has been actually abusive, screaming and lying about me in front of the entire staff for years. I have therapy and medical records to prove all of this. I just want to get back at her so badly." I had to talk her into not doing anything to get back at her, that "once you leave here, you won't ever have to contact anyone here again, including me. It's so much better just to walk out the door and let them panic that someone's gone."
She told me this after like an hour of time chatting privately at a staff event. She's a little weird, sure, but the boss here really is horrible. Same one who shouted at me.

Right now, you're in a very delicate "deal" with your employer. They need you and can't replace you but you're not exactly what they want. You need your job and don't like them but you want to quit and know that they'll fire you if they can. Each party doesn't trust each other and will shoot once they get a bullet. They'll shoot once they find a replacement and you'll shoot once you can leave. Until then, you both have to play the pretend "best buddies at work and we want to help you and everything is good :)" (Delusional lies/gaslighting/drinking the koolaid) charade. This of course, is just really awkward and stressful for any sane human, so I don't blame you for feeling this way.

This is just business, anon, the Wild West. Every man is for himself and most will throw you away like garbage if they need to, don't take it personally and play the game back at them and grow thicker skin.

The kids I teach tense up like a plank whenever this person talks to them too so it makes it even harder. I've talked a lot to these kids because they're basically the only sane people in the school and the administrators acting like this gives them real stress too. Hard to explain what it's like having every action I do at work monitored like this because people think that as long as I'm doing the job correctly, what's the problem? But every time I teach something I have to sit for 15 minutes of feedback or so and in a fairly large staff and was clearly hired at the last minute when the last guy they had ran out overnight and never called back. He ghosted them. I'm the rookie of the entire staff and this is why they're doing this. Starting to see why the last guy did that.

Teaching is government contract work that is highly cutthroat, cult-like, and operates like the bourgeoisie. The admins have all the power and them and their little buddies get to do what they want while being protected under heavily lobbied gov regulations, public moral high ground, connections, and seniority. If you don't fall in line with them then they get rid of you.

* I don't think it would be bad for you to talk to your manager peoples and explain to them Why you feel like they are about to fire you and to then ask what you could do to improve the situation.

If you have convinced yourself they are firing you
even though clearly they didn't fire you
then you do not have a clear picture of what expectations they have of you. If you do what you're supposed to do, you wouldn't worry about being fired or not.

Anyway, hope you'll find something better after your 8 months.

There was a higher boss here but something happened to them, seriously, that prevents them from being accessible to speak with for a few months. This is what it feels like. I haven't had enough other jobs, just 1, to really compare though. We are literally contract workers though and there is "Firing Day" once per year where this woman tells us each "re-signed" or "fired" for next year and that one day nobody wants to talk with each other.

I think teaching well and being good at it is a skill, not something I can just "do" anymore. Because even when it seems like I've done everything right when they actually watch me teach they get upset about questions I answered or things I said naturally in a lesson. So you might think "just stick to the lesson exactly, almost like a script" but then I got scolded for being not fun enough and too bland. I know there are great teachers out there, but it just feels like there's no winning for me here. I've even watched the "great teachers" here sometimes but from my perspective, they're making mistakes too but because it's just me and not the boss watching nobody cares. I'm sure it is a skill and I just don't get it yet, but because I apparently lack that skill, kind of, I can't seem to tell what makes a lesson good or bad anymore so I'm doing what I think is best to help them learn and hoping the boss likes it.

I'm a possible would-be teacher in Chicago (Still contemplating going into it but I think I might go into something else), and every year teachers have a, like you say, "firing day", where they will go through the teachers and decide who made it into their club (Who they like), and then fire ("let go") everyone else, since they're all basically contract workers. Happens most in CPS (The public state schools) where the admins have even more power.

I feel you completely anon. It's because "teaching" is not a hard-skill anymore; the women and welfare state have turned it into a soft skill with 0 competition. That's why education is garbage and looked down on today, because frankly, it is and should be. Anyone can be a teacher as the certifications and education programs you have to go through are completely devoid of any solid facts and hence, easy as fuck and pointless. This is why the teaching field is so heavily over saturated with complete fucking retards and most of your teachers growing up were skill-less dipshits who taught out of a book and not their brain (They don't have one).

This means bro, that they can really say whatever the fuck they want about your teaching and justify in some fucked up way with mental gymnastics. It's not about you being a good teacher, it's about whether they like you or not and if you think and teach like them. If you do, you're a "great teacher". If you don't, "you need to work on...", "try to engage the students...", "well you did X, but not Y".

I agree with this after speaking to so many of them and being bombarded with conflicting opinions, especially about what activities kids are capable of understanding, it all just seems like a mess and it's clear they're all just using buzzwords when it's convenient for them. They actually quote studies when talking to me and I've looked up their studies and they are 100% of the time just pop-sci garbage like "how to get students to revel in their mistakes" articles. I majored in a STEM field.

Anyway the favorite line I ever heard from my boss was "There's a stereotype that girls aren't good at math which we obviously want to avoid perpetuating. So when you make the ones who aren't strong at solving math problems solve them in class, although you don't realize it, you're perpetuating the idea in their heads 'i'm not good math. I'm not good at math.' Try to avoid that." Basically she's saying not to let students who are bad at math solve math problems because it will only reinforce the idea that they are bad at math. I could make everyone just "learn through games" instead but I really thought about how backwards what my boss said to me that day was.
