I feel you OP, you were in a tough spot. Learn from this, in the future just say you were laid off, had some cash in the bank and decided to take a break from work for a few months.

I have a feeling you'll get another interview soon, just keep your chin up and apply else where.

no it doesn't. they've already decided if they want to hire you within the first 5 minutes of the interview. if they didn't want you, a thank you note after the interview isn't going to sway their mind.

Maybe if you work in retail or service where theres a massive number of applicants.

Any professional company hiring something like an engineer cannot make a decision in the first 5 minutes. Theres too many factors to consider and typically it comes down to 1-3 candidates and any little thing you do to make yourself stand out helps.

In his defense, being really pushy about following up really is one of those things that almost every boomer tells you to do, but then almost every boomer gets mad at you for doing to them when you want them to hire you.

That being said, I think the fact that they *told* me a range of days I'd hear from them and then I gave them several days past that before I phoned in will in fact come across as appropriate in the relationship I've already started building with the interviewer. So I'll do it, even though it's usually a bad idea.

Boomers are the ones who hate it the most. Remember, boomers did NOT enter the work force run by boomers. They give advice of what worked for them (on the workforce leaders of their time, their previous generation). That does not mean that the advice they give works on them. Boomers detest weakness. I'm calling bullshit on at least this part. Boomers are *notorious* for seeking to select for just the right amount of weakness/mediocrity to avoid hiring anybody bright enough to threaten their position, or who might have better prospects in a year or two and just leave. They have no use for strength, they just want a good monkey who will sit in the cubicle, not break anything, and never leave or look for a promotion.

My best interview I showed up in a freakin polo and jeans. All the other dudes were wearing suits and had briefcases. It was for a developer position at a start up company.
The thing is that I already had a job that I liked and I just went to this interview out of pure curiosity because I thought their idea was interesting.
I went in there totally unprepared and just started asking questions. Me and the interviewers just sat around for to hours just talking shit. It was awesome.
I didn't expect to get the job at all. But I fucking did. And they let me work remote so I could keep my original job too. I worked for them about a year or so and I am still good friends with those guys.
I don't know if there is a moral to this story or if even helps OP, but what I realized is that I went in there not really giving a shit and it served me well. The hungry don't get fed.

This is the same thing.
