What the fuck do you even mean "API service?" Do you know what the words you’re using even mean? They don’t offer data.

Szabo says that using good metaphors is important. So, here goes:

The API (the data) is the oil. What Chainlink does is that it gives us all a chance to become rich by extracting that oil and feeding it to smart contracts, the ‘engine’ of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. However, a node operator doesn’t just scoop up the oil with their hands and throw it into a Lambo’s gas tank; there are steps.

The node operator, in order to extract oil, needs to build oil wells — lots and lots of oil wells. These ‘wells’ are the external adapters. In order to have a successful oil field, you’ll need hundreds of wells connecting to hundreds of datapoints to feed whatever data smart contracts will need. One of CLC’s many services is building these wells, these adapters, for you.

From there, you need to pay to use and ferry the data. In much the same way that it costs money to extract and transport the oil to the refineries, it costs money to extract data from the API. This cost is often in the form of subscription fees: BNC’s two feeds alone cost $400/mo at max usage.

So, how do you circumvent those costs? Remember in There Will Be Blood, when DD Lewis builds his own pipeline so he doesn’t have to pay the fees? CLC Group also does THAT for you. All of the fees you pay with them are per-call, avoiding big subscription fees. You can then set up your node to only accept jobs that will be profitable and don’t have to worry about variable demand.

There’s no situation in which people wouldn’t be able to pay the fees; the fees will be fractions of a cent. What the fuck are you even talking about.

THIS is actually an interesting point -- finally.

Banks COULD hypothetically charge for PSD2 API calls, but according to the law doing so would require them to charge their customer-users just to look up the same data (you can't charge Joe Online Shop owner to look at Sarah Customer's data unless you charge Sarah Customer every time she looks at her own data).

Hypothetically, a bank could find a clever way to jump through a series of legal hoops and make it so financially onerous for contracts to call their formerly-proprietary data that no one wants to. It's an interesting thought experiment, also...

It has nothing to do with any of the APIs that CLCG has already signed
