12837344 No.12837344 [Reply] [Original]

>Entitled Millennials have been given an “inflated” sense of self-importance due to social media and are no longer willing to do unpaid work to advance their careers.

>That’s the view of Muffin Break general manager Natalie Brennan, who says the precipitous decline in eager young university students and graduates started “about 10 years ago”.

>“There’s just nobody walking in my door asking for an internship, work experience or unpaid work, nobody,” Ms Brennan said.

>“You don’t see it anymore. Before that people would be knocking on your door all the time, you couldn’t keep up with how many people wanted to be working. In fact I’d run programs because there were so many coming in.”

>Last year she had one intern in marketing and “that was it”. “I can’t even remember the one before that, six, seven, eight years ago,” she said.

>“In essence they’re working for free, but I can tell you every single person who has knocked on my door for an internship or work experience has ended up with a job. Every single person, because they back themselves.”

She's right millennialbros, we are WAY too entitled and should pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and demand to work for free.

Companies forgot the value of comprehensive training ages ago. Legitimate apprenticeship programs were killed off in the 70s and 80s. They were replaced by a sea of hit-or-miss secondary education that the employee has to pay for. The closest replacement was the internship, which eventually left the student paying to work. The UK seems to have it really bad. They have apprenticeships in nearly every field, but the programs are exploited for cheap £2/hr labor and do a terrible job of training.

Now the economy is thriving and there is a lack of talent (especially fresh talent). Proper apprenticeships and paid training have been coming back.

Anyone still exploiting the starved experience of a bygone ragged economy is bound to be fucked, at least in the short-term. Feels good

We may have been fucked over by unaffordable housing, education, and retirement, but we are just in time to witness the collapse of boomer culture. Remember when McDonalds got away with selling literal shit to retards? Now the boomers are SEETHING as one by one, their genetic footprint is wiped clean from the culture

"Train people well enough so they can leave, treat people well enough so they won't want to" - Richard Branson

If you look at what motivates employees, salary is usually 4th or 5th on the list, always behind a sense of doing meaningful work and a great working atmosphere/environment. That all falls under organizational culture. The great thing about changing a workplace culture for the better is that, financially, it's very cheap. It does take a lot of time and intentional effort though, and since the payback isn't easily seen on the balance sheet it gets put aside by management.

IMO, diversity is a good thing. as in, it forces the companies to hire "unpopular" people who deserve it. for example, there's no reason that a blind person is any less qualified than a normal person for a coding job assuming that they have an equal amount of knowledge. the problem is that the management misinterprets diversity initiatives as hiring the diverse people for the sake of it.

>> No.12841793

Next time HR says something about diversity just ask "Why should anyone listen to a lecture on diversity from a department with a 90/10 gender ratio?"

>> No.12841846

>>12841745
A blind person is less qualified than a normal person assuming they have the same amount of onowledge. Have you ever seen a blind person work? They are much less efficient at computer tasks, due to, you know, being blind. Accessibility software can lessen the impact, but it's still there.

>> No.12841875

>>12841846
then, the software that you're using is not actually accessible and qualification != efficiency.

>> No.12841893

>>12841875
Yes, tell me more about how a blind person will be able to scan logs to debug an issue with a screen reader just as fast as a normal person. Efficiency is part of qualification. If you can do twice as much work in the same time frame as someone else, you are more qualified for the job. Or the company should pay you twice as much.

>> No.12841915

>>12841893
the problem is the software, not the blind person. yes, you're right that (RIGHT NOW) there isn't accessible coding software for blind people to utilize. this fact still doesn't make them any less qualified to code.

In the right field, perhaps. I started out paying my employees more than all of my competitors and provided great benefits including performance-based bonuses. They all ended up taking it for granted, productivity declined and they became increasingly entitled. At this point I'm a strong believer that, at least in my industry, every employee has a shelf-life so there's no real point in treating them well since they're going to taper off and need to be pruned regardless.

>> No.12841956

that blind person only takes twice as long to do something because people are too retarded to come up with tools that are suitable for blind people to do the task in the same amount of time.

>> No.12841991

>>12841956
It's impossible to come up with such tools. Information simply cannot be conveyed fast enough until we get direct links to the brain. Either way, the blind person is less qualified.

this is a stretch lol. there's no reason that something like a tactile computer screen can't make blind people code much better. the only problem is that people like you are too narrow minded and blame everything on muh diversity when it's much more nuanced than that.

of course sighted people can use touchscreens, and i would encourage them to use these tools, as that it would increase accessibility for blind people. like i explained earlier, the problem is people like you who don't understand accessibility and make the situation worse for everyone instead of just using the right tools for right people.

Women are unironically good at corporate shit. I'm sure they're worse at sales, trading, and investing, but on the corporate accounting side most of the women I work with are more competent than the men. Their biggest drawback is being extremely risk averse to the point of creating needless work, but to management that's a good thing. They suck at negotiating pay too and end up driving down wages since management can point at one and go, "She's been here at the same position for 4 years and hasn't asked for a raise."

So I saw this thread yesterday, and I'm back again after seeing this post >>12840880 . I didn't realise it was Australia.

You literally aren't allowed to work for free here.
The regulations state that you can only intern for free if it is more beneficial to the student than the company.
Which of course is vague and many companies hire unpaid interns because those intern really do need the experience to get a real job in the future in the current market. So it might as well not be a rule at all.

I've had a couple internships, and I'm glad the industry norm for engineering is to pay the interns the same rate as graduates.
Although there was one company that had 30 or so interns who would just do little unpaid tasks that wouldn't otherwise get done, and were structured for skill building. Then paid "gigs" within the company would be offered to these interns first, before advertised externally. I spend a bout 3 hours per week at that company for 15 weeks and in that time there was no gig suitable for a mechanical engineer.

The fuck are you doing 8 months of unpaid work for? If it's part of the degree, like medicine or something then I understand but if it's just in an office then you're being exploited. If a manager can't/won't decide whether you're suitable for that company or not within 2 weeks you should go somewhere else that actually values your time.
