In the early 2000's this was proving to not be enough, so they pushed that every single job should have a degree or 2+ year certification process to then tenure their middle management positions. This still wasn't enough, so they expanded HR departments and put a big emphasis on "personality", so 50 year old Bob can whisper in Nancy's ear that the young buck crushing everyone else is "kinda creepy and not a team player". Why wouldn't they believe Bob? He's been here 20 years and plays golf with a partner companies CFO once a year. He also has a sweet house and 3 kids in college, this new guy lives with his mom and has no responsibilities - what a loser.
3) Boomers need a retirement, the 40 year career and cheap house wasn't enough. Let's create a retirement fund social security. Boy, It didn't take long for SSI to overleverage it's liabilities.
