>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

PROTIP: use both at the same time (i took it off to make the chart less spaghetti-y)
using both you can quickly gauge vol as well as the "unexpected" moves that will bring the price action beyond the keltner channels upper/lower bounds.

basically, when you see the bollys tightening inbetween the kelts, shes about to go ONE way or another

also, i forgot to add in last post, i also look at put/call ratio a lot when planning out month+ positions. a couple weeks ago i saw the put/call OI spike and start going straight up. the folks selling naked puts on SPY arent the ones who normally lose ime. the problem with using THAT is that its impossible to tell when expirry is for all of those

Other car manufacturers have caught up in the luxury segment, and will catch up in the $20k-$40k segment in 2020 latest according to their roadmaps. Like hypothetically, if you saw say, $3 puts trading at $1 an option with an execution date a few months out, say July, and then proceeded to buy 100 options for $100, does that mean you have the right to sell 10000 shares of the bankrupt company at $3 a share and pocket $30000? Like even after they're pinklisted and you can pick up those shares you intend to sell for literal pennies?

"Short squeeze thesis" is a weird idea. That's not usually how squeezes work. Squeeze happens mainly on bearish fake outs. You don't get long term warning on that and you don't know where the lower pivot point of a potential squeeze will be. If you're holding waiting for said squeeze, you could be deep in the red and barely break even if it does happen.

hedging is never a bad idea desu
just remember, you can now "hedge" by simply being long the indexes.

in fact, thought experiment time:
stop thinking of your short position as a "short"
think of it as a hedge for your longs that youre gonna buy
add up your deltas on those puppies and itll prolly be around 100ish or a lil less (im speculating, not looking at it sry)
buy that many shares of the Qs and all of a sudden youre perfectly hedged

Brainlet investing noob here.
If a large percentage of investors came to the conclusion that the market was broadly overvalued then prices would fall, right? Unless you believe market prices growing exponentially is sustainable then it's overdue for a correction. But isn't the average P/E ratio for the S&P 500 something in the 20's? From what I've read it sounds like a stock isn't regarded as overvalued unless the P/E is up around 40 something or more... are companies just making that much more money or are low interest rates part of why the market is running so "hot"?

because you bought out so far in time, your deltas will remain relatively flat for a while in either direction. theta is a non-issue for, imo, the next year to a year and a half. it adds up, sure, but its also a logarithmic curve, so it wont get brutal till the last 3 months (plus you only have 2 contracts, not 200). the closer your contract is to strike, the closer its delta will get to 50. as it moves away, your deltas will get further away. but again, since you got so much time on em, there is still a serious possibility that, even if the Qs go up another 20 bucks, that it could come back down again (and it ALWAYS goes down faster). as such, this change in deltas will be FAR less dramatic than the contracts of the same strike but expiring out 3 months from now.

you did the right thing by buying such long term contracts for a macro move like this, and with options, its hard to "wait until the move is confirmed", as by that time the contracts will have already doubled in premium. the problem is, you didnt seem to realize that, by buying those, you were signing on for a $10k sized short for the next two years.

look for that options book on "options futures and derivatives" by something hull i think his name was (check "libgen dawt io" for any books). people scoff at me when i say learn the maths before trading options, but this is EXACTLY why i say that. you claim to be afraid of buying $10k of Qs long on lev, yet you just did a more convoluted version of this, but on the SHORT side of the stick.

learn maths first.
trade options second

i'm afraid of getting margin called for 5k and not being able to cover it. by buying an option my loss was capped at my premiums, or at least that was the thought process.

>just promise me youll study hard

>> No.12605199

>>12605107
>it's my other positions. i close out a couple of calls and sell some SPY and i'm left with the cash
perfect

alright, so heres the plan:
>1) buy 15 shares of QQQ
you should have like $800 left over
this $800 is what we will be using to buy a QQQ call with to pad out your hedge
since you you have 15 shares long QQQ now, and youre (technically) short 57 shares rn, this brings the net short position down to you being short around 42 shares of QQQ (or a $7k sized short). not bad, but not great
now we
>buy an april 18 2019 QQQ call
the strike you choose is what determines how good of a hedge youre gonna get
since the remaining short position is 42 shares, youre looking for a strike that has a delta of close to that. rn its the 170 call for $420, but that will be a little different tomorrow since were up AH. if you choose a delta of LESS than that, it will still leave you with a net short position (subtract the delta of the call you select from 42 to get this value), but a MUCH smaller one.

now what will you do with this call? well, you will hold it for NO LONGER THAN 2 WEEKS (preferably only one). if you go past that, theta will start robbing you HARD (and if its still OTM by then youll lose a few deltas too, but not too much desu). you DONT want that. so if two weeks goes by and the market is still climbing higher, you will need to
>3) rollout to a new call
rollout is when you sell the current call you have, and use this premium to buy a new one at a later expiry. youre looking for another 3ish month till expiry call. you will select this call based on the deltas, with the point being to make your net position as close to zero as possible. you WILL lose some to theta, but if the market keeps going up, you will make it back in the fact that the call premium will increase as it gets closer to strike.

then
>4) rinse repeat
you can continue this method indefinitely if the market continues upward further, and lose a SUBSTANTIALLY smaller amount of money

to add to this, if we get to a point where the market starts to pullback, you will sell your shares, AND your call. and suddenly you are gonna be back to making money off your $10k sized short

sry if this is complicated, but thats as simple as i can make it. you should, tonight, learn about "rollouts" for options, and try and learn how theta works (check investopedia)

hm, neat
t-thanks uwu

$170 4/18 call is less than $420 rn but it'll probably go up tomorrow.
it might be a bit weird to sell my calls tomorrow though. i have $22 AMD calls that expire in a month and god knows what the fuck that's going to be worth in the morning

so if i'm reading this right, the 3 ways this could go are:

1) i reverse my position and go for positive net delta if i'm starting to feel bullish
2) try to time the market and sell off my long positions when i'm ok with the the loss, think the market is falling, and/or emotionally break
3) i hold everything, maybe roll up my $145 up to something higher if QQQ is too high for my tastes?

does that seem about right or am i misunderstanding?

tho i suppose worse comes to worse, you should just ditch one of the puts you got, which should leave you with some spare cash to buy enough stock to cover your negative deltas on the remaining put

remember:
however big your delta is on your puts, thats how many shares you need to buy in order to hedge. this will change slowly over time, but you will be SEVERELY limiting the damage

personally, i think that the market will hit a wall this friday and either pull back, or crash out hard again so you might not be as screwed as you think you are desu (tho liquidity on contracts gets kinda thin when ur out 717 days lol)

heres a pic of what it would look like if you took on this position >>12605199 into close. you would actually be MAKING money by the time QQQ hits 167.20

desu tho, i feel a little uneasy about recommending you to trade more options lol.

>so if i'm reading this right
eh kinda

>1) i reverse my position and go for positive net delta if i'm starting to feel bullish
the goal is to have NO deltas

>2) try to time the market and sell off my long positions when i'm ok with the the loss, think the market is falling, and/or emotionally break
if you have net zero delta, you will not be losing money (overall at least. the puts will lose some, but it will be counteracted by your call and stock)

>3) i hold everything, maybe roll up my $145 up to something higher if QQQ is too high for my tastes?
the rollout is for the CALL. NOT for the put. youre trying to make it so you lose as little money as possible on the way up by making your net delta as close to zero as you can

desu you might want to consider the idea i posted in THIS post since youre new to derivatives. youre MUCH better off hedging your puts with QQQ shares alone, NOT QQQ calls, because of all the other shit that goes on with options.

remember:
1 share long = one less delta on your put position
+/-10 delta means youre position will move like 10 shares long/short

oh shit
i didnt see that volume on those contracts
youre gonna have a HELL of a time ditching either of those puts senpai
you were the only dude who bought one today
you might HAVE to do the rollout on them

AAAAAAAAAAa
i meant do that rollout strategy on the calls like i said in >>12605199
DO NOT try to rollout the puts
you will get kiked HARD by the spread for like 200 bucks

lmfao i feel the same at this point

well with any luck, muh theory is right and SPY is gonna bounce hard off of 270 and pullback/crash, Qs will prolly follow more or less, and then we will be back down to at least your B/E maybe as soon as next week. and if the market starts tanking, youre gonna have no trouble getting rid of those puts. but until then, its gonna be harsh.

rule of thumb, if no one else is buying the options (ie theres no volume on em), DONT buy them. the spread on those puppies is 200 bucks wide so if you bought and sold them immediately, you would lose around 200 bucks (which fucking HURTS)

so all in all, this strat >>12605199 , while complicated, will leave you with extremely minimal loss.

doing nothing will hurt a LOT until/if it goes down again.

doing this >>12605587 (ie eating one of the puts and using that cash to hedge by buying stock) will lose you a couple hundo immediately from that AWFUL spread, but will hedge you perfectly after that point

its up to you i guess, but do your research senpai and pls dont sue me if shit goes crazy lol
