Doggo Edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

Therefore I set up a dividend calendar of all the individual stocks I want to own and will have decent income in each month. Its more of a psychological thing, but I did outpace the S&P 500 last year. Real test will be how it does during the next bull run, but my core stocks are Dogs of the Dow for 2019 so I think they'll be good.

Nothing on 5G is priced in since nobody knows if its actually going to pan out on the large scale at this point. We really only have proof of concepts in ideal testing environments. On top of that we have no idea if everyone is going to hop on board with redesigning their towns and cities so that 5G networks can optimally work. So putting money into telecoms for 5G is basically gambling, but thats what makes it fun.

But really, to Rick's point, Wall Street was looking at his face, his tone, the way he put those words out there, to really give us some sense of direction. We were looking at a 47% chance of a rate hike going into today, and based on Powell's blinking, stuttering, quite frankly the look of fear in his eyes, investors know he isn't comfortable with this move. Who you really need to long when it comes to 5G are the ones who make the chips, other components, and systems that are used. Phone sales will also spike at some point during 5G build out.

Personally I think it means long DRAM. It's the only common denominator among all 5G boosted industries, including also IOT. Wait to see if we get another JUST leg down from rate hike though.

I live in the US.

My opinion is that you have a common bond with your countrymen & investing in your shared future is a moral good.
In addition, other country's laws are made for their people so you're always at risk putting your money there. For example, I don't invest in Chinese companies because I think eventually the Chinese are going to any seize any foreign assets they can get their hands on. That said, the US is pretty free market and we like Brazil so we're not going to mess with Br investors.
A third consideration is the size of the economies. The US's economy is huge. Eight of the largest 10 companies are US companies. US investors who put a lot of money in the US are still pretty diversified and have exposure to those very large companies. If you live in a tiny country and you put all your money in that country's economy, you're incredibly concentrated in one place and very overweight in small companies. Brazil's economy is pretty large: about 1/5 of the US. Even so, I'd worry about diversification.

Some would argue that the best portfolio is a whole world market-cap weighted etf like VTSAX. If you did that you'd be pretty heavily in the US. But, I'd probably put more money in my own country than an market cap weighted etf would.

rational or not, capitalist markets allow for an efficient, growing economy because a free market automatically sets the price instead of people.

unless you can point to where communism was more efficient than capitalism (you can't because all forms of socialism and communism have proven to be vastly less efficient than capitalism)

>you want production at a standstill?
A very bizarre critique. The issue with social coordination is that people won't exercise that power to actually invest things? Even in the USSR the level of investment and savings was far higher than in capitalist countries. The inefficiency came not from the coordination of investment, but from managers lacking incentive to implement new technologies and utilizing that investment.

>give the people a vote on the means of production instead of the individual?
Individuals today generally do not have a vote, unless you're name's bill gates or jeff bezos.

>unless you can point to where communism was more efficient than capitalism
All these things are historically contingent. British textile production wasn't more efficient than Indian production until they just invaded India and shut that shit down in the age of imperialism. Communism of the 20th century was acting to catch up to the advanced capitalist countries, and began from a stand point of semi-feudal development. Beginning from developed capitalist countries, as well with the non-market incentive systems that already exist in those countries, I don't see the same inefficiencies developing. It should be noted, even in Venezeula, the inefficiencies of the oil sector festered under both capitalist and socialist political parties. These things don't change with larger methods of coordination.

This is the 5G meme. Individuals do not need to stream giant hunks of data. Driverless cars do not need 5G. They need autonomous systems so when the 5G signal drops or the car ventures into rural places it still functions. Why do people fall for this shit?

Video streaming? Video game streaming? We already have this with 4G and Wifi. Faster IT? Nope, hardwired connections are still faster and more reliable for enterprise use.

5G is a shitty meme. People are not capped by speed anymore.

>rational or not, capitalist markets allow for an efficient, growing economy because a free market automatically sets the price instead of people.
It allows for a growing economy, but not an "efficient" one. If you consider how much labour is put into making that system go around and how much capital is wasted on stupid ideas (that thankfully usually get nipped in the bud), how much inefficiency that stems from oligopolies and de facto monopolies performing rent seeking with no pressure to improve service because they only need answer to their shareholders, not the people they serve (telecoms are prime example), how patents result in needless duplication of labor, rent seeking, stifling of innovation that builds on the works of others (both in technology and culture), how differing sectors have competing interests and sometimes also interests that are at odds with the interests of the population due to the primacy of the profit motive (for example mining companies not trying to limit ecological damage because why should they its not their problem)... there's countless shit like that. The growth aspect also ignores externalities like ecology, population sustainability, etc.

The question is whether the very high inefficiency that exists in capitalism is actually not really that high compared to some alternative system. Personally I'm on the fence on that one.

The allocation of investment in command economies was one of their most rational and successful features (Mao's great leap forward being one idiotic exception). It was the larger incentive structures and pricing schemes that were largely failures. In fact, it was the USSR in the 20s that first even broached the economic theory question of what criteria the government should use for allocating investment, pretty much founding the entirety of modern developmental economics. The west wouldn't come to grapple with these questions for another 30-40 years. And indeed, even developing capitalist countries have been forced to resort to these measures in order to catch up. Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, they all had state some high level of state coordination of investment in order to industrialize.

2) take a look at the volume at price in this 265 to 275 range. this is the big trading range for the past year. the selling pressure dries up above it and gets worse below it
3) S&P just has a tendancy to bounce off even numbers like that cuz muh trader psychology an shieet

ill also go on record and say that not continuing hikes isnt quite the good news that everyone seems to be making it out to be. at least not in the long run. i agree with the decision desu as i think more rates rn would sink us, but i also really think were gonna need the extra ammo when we need to drop rates
