> Go to dentist after a long time to discuss removing a wisdom tooth
> No appointments for a few month
> Get roped into getting a cleaning at a later date, ehh okay
> Come in, get a cleaning
> Get told I need a deep cleaning
> Regular cleaning proceeds
> Get told she didn't go as deep (for a regular) since she didn't feel comfortable due to bleeding
> As if that didn't happen nearly every tooth cleaning I had
> Deep cleaning scheduled for the following week
> Realize about a week later:
> What was the point of the regular cleaning if I was going to get a deep cleaning anyways!?
> They just milked me for insurance money

Biz anons would it be wise to call them out on it when I go in for the deep cleaning or is it best I keep my mouth shut?

Points to consider
> They generally do a good job
> I still have a wisdom tooth extraction scheduled
> THEY MILKED ME EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T MY MONEY THEY HAD ME WASTE AN HOUR OF MY LIFE OR SO
> It's NOT one of those franchise dental places.

My gf is currently studying to become a dentist. Ever since I started dating her I always get my dental work done at her university free of charge because the students need pacients to practice with.
They are in charge of simple shit like cleanining and their professors will perform the more complicated stuff.

I don't live in the US so I dunno if it's applicable where you live

Ahhhh I want to call them out on it but it seems unwise

Floss you absolute nigger. Your gingivitis probably worsened which is why they held off.

By not having proper dental hygiene you are risking a lot. Including chronic debilitating toothaches, tooth loss, heart disease, respiratory infection, dementia, erectile dysfunction, endocarditis, and kidney failure.

Only literal subhumans don't clean their mouth

A lot of times when you're gums are in pretty horrific condition there's no real way to remove all of the plaque and calculus (tartar) that's hardened below the gum level without causing the patient a lot of pain. A "deep cleaning" is kind of a misnomer. The procedure is technically called "scaling and root planing" which is an indication that there's actually an infected root surface (below the gums) that needs to be completely debrided to get your gums healthy again, and 99% of the time this needs to be done with at least local anesthetic (novocaine) to keep you comfortable.

When a random person like you calls up they don't exactly know what they're getting in to and a basic cleaning like what you got is the bare minimum even for someone that is completely healthy and goes to a dentist every 6 months. You even said yourself it's been a long time. Your gums were/are probably a mess. Your complaint about the "basic cleaning" vs "deep cleaning" is one of the most common complaints patients have and I think it's due to the fact that their office didn't do a great job of telling you that you have gum disease because it's an uncomfortable thing to just come out and tell a person, but it is what it is. Give them another shot.

op is not wrong.... with that much tartar and bone loss, should be pretty evident that a deep cleaning is needed even at the initial visit. He should've been told that at the first visit, instead of let me do the cleaning... oh yeah btw, you need deep cleaning too.

Why do they call it gingivitis a disease? It goes away if you get everything fixed.

Dentist deal with quality of life issues, not life or death. They are small business owners, so yes, you will get milked, you will get sold to just like a car dealership. If you have ppo insurance just get a second opinion. i wouldn't want to call someone out, then have them pull my tooth out

All of this stuff is about having good communication with the person so they understand what's going on. If you aren't being clear then people think they're getting taken for a ride. Maybe it was evident, maybe it wasn't. Either way it's probably better to do something than nothing if there is shit all over a person's teeth. It's up to them whether they want to do "more" after that. All you can do is inform them.

Gingivitis is just the most basic kind of gum infection. It's totally reversible once the plaque is removed. Evidence of gum pocketing that involves a loss of attachment of the tooth to the gum is the next phase of gum disease which usually is treated by the "deep cleaning" OP was talking about, at least as the first step.

Just because they own a business does not make them unethical.
