This guy made Stardew Valley in his neet basement for 5 years in isolation. He's made over 50 million dollars since release. Why aren't you making a video game, /biz/?

He spent 10 years actually but he announced that the game was in development in 2012. I followed the game since that time when it was greenlighted on steam.

you can count the number of these success with game stories on one hand. there are literally millions of similar indie games with just as much time and effort put into them that make $0. game development is the worst industry to be in. its like saying why don't you just become the #1 app on appstore, the fart simulator did it. yet there are literally millions of apps that have less than 100 downloads. it has more to do with being picked up in the news, becoming a meme and getting onto the top seller list which further propels your popularity than anything else, which are completely out of your control and are essentially random luck events.

This sounds more accurate.

Also trying to make a video game. Learning coding, on and off, at the moment. Frankly speaking best I can do with making a game is just a text based game. Then again I started learning less than a year ago. Starting to think it might be pointless in terms of never having to have another job as the chance of success is low. I recall one anon on here or maybe some other board who already has a game on steam but it's not really known, looks alright but not my kinda game.

Making games is definitely hard. I made a text based game cause thats the best I can do. Not even sure I want to continue learning how to make video games. A lot of effort and you might not even be succesful. I partially wanted to make a game for fun but that amount of effort just doesn't seem worthwhile comsidering the time invested just to make a short text based video game.

It gets easier with time like anything else, but it really does require a special kind of person who doesn't mind being isolated for days on end, spending possibly a whole day or more on a single problem. They should teach prisoners to code, they'd be perfect for it.

It was boring when I spent hours working on it only for it to be a text based game. Integrating graphics and audio I don't even know how to at the moment and sounds super difficult. Was hoping to make a video game that's succesful so I no longer have to wagecuck and hopefully succesful enough that my family wouldn't have to wagecuck either but it's becoming less appealing to learn this. Heck haven't even studied much after doing a bunch of coding a few weeks ago. Currently in my 20s and have a poorly paid job.

It might be a bit too idealistic but i find it a sad state how most games teach you little of value unless you intentionally dive into topics like market economics or minmaxing and write your own simulation software or bots.

So i want to make a game that looks good enough and is educational just by it's gameplay to get people hooked on entertainment value but still learn something instead of purely wasting time with no returns. For that purpose making it run even on the worst toaster should greatly help.

Also probably gonna need a lot of resources if i want to do anything close to using "ai". On the bright side i got a degree in ml/math so i'm at least not completely retarded and might have a chance.

I'm working on a VR game and you don't really need to read books. You just need programming experience. I went from coding software for a few years straight into game dev.
Only thing you might want to do is learn how to draw. Then you can transfer that skill into making your own 3d models so you don't have to outsource.
Big tools like Unity, Unreal and Blender make it way easier to integrate graphics/sound/whatever you want.

VR is making the educational game thing much more interesting. For instance, there's the game Wrench that just came out which teaches you automobile repair.
This shit is going to make trade schools obsolete.
