I've got a problem /smg/ I'm fairly successful with my options lately (saved up around 90k) and I've noticed different habits developing in terms of degenerate behavior. It's not that inflation rates were so much lower under the gold standard, it's that years with high inflation were canceled out with years of high deflation. Fed intervention has made it so that inflation is kept low, but at the same time deflation is prevented. This makes it so it accumulates over time.

I believe that's 3% in real terms, which makes sense since the dividend reinvestment should be calculated in the same way.

I maintain that, given these time frames of 20 years, it's worth it to invest in bonds for several years during late cycle periods, even if you are off by several years, to escape downturns. I'll be running some simulations in R to establish exactly what the difference in returns would be.
