it's really not a question that's out of line. you SHOULD have some hobby outside of work that you can talk about because every person needs something like that, men especially. Trust me, it doesn't take much or that much dedication to impress people and make them think at least for the moment that you are interesting. Otherwise what do you do with your time? Do you want them to assume you just surf the web and watch TV during all your free time?

Hobbies can indicate your social class and status and whether you'll fit in with your new colleagues.
