>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

Caution note for WEED/CGC knife catchers. I'm pretty sure there is more downside to come for the next couple days unless Bruce Linton drops another news bomb after close or tomorrow morning like he did immediately after their last shit financials. Highest probability price action I can determine on the chart is a retest of the 41.80(CAD) low. If that holds it's a double bottom and possible return to bullish trend. If it breaks, the next most likely bottom is the long term channel (diagonal blue line on pic related). Target for that is ~$40.

Fuck knows.

After the debacle yesterday, I went back and listened to his q2 CC. He did mention in no uncertain terms that vit-E was going to cost them. But the market gave no shits and pumped it to $9. Then of course q3 came and surprise, vit-E has gone to shit and rev fell. Makes me wonder if people actually do any real homework.

He did say he expects a very good q4 rev growth, from multiple contracts (assuming no hitches) and shipments from their sugar business finally starting delivery. If all goes as he promised, this would be the easiest 50% you ever make.

But then again, he could be wrong and this shit will go nowhere. But in my opinion the upsides outweigh the risk at this price.

Oh, make sure you ignore LCIguy, he won't shut up about conv shares and is full of shit.

If you're going to be making web requests, Java is a poor choice. Python requires much less code for doing that and is much more straight forward.

Same with making the back-end of a website. Java is way too enterprise for most shit.

I think if a person doesn't have enough experience to pick a language on their own, Python is usually the best tool for the job. Java is best if you're just picking up a language for the sake of learning how to code.

>Makes me wonder if people actually do any real homework.
How much of AMRS is owned by retail investors?
How much of /smg/ even looks into SEC filings? The last time I did that much fundamentals, I lost a lot of money (LCI)
Which goes to show that the retail investors sure as shit don't do their homework, but we probably don't do as much as we think we did even when we actually do our homework.

You could check insider ownership and watch for insider selling and buying activity on finviz. imo insider activity is the single biggest indicator of where the stock price is heading.

>Oh, make sure you ignore LCIguy, he won't shut up about conv shares and is full of shit.

Share dilution is real, but its actually a great way to finance the company with little risk, especially since the conversion is at $6.25. Imagine if you are holding the debt, are you seriously going to convert at today's prices and lose 50% of your loan? Besides if AMRS can deliver the growth it promises, the dilution effect is going to be next to nothing on valuation.

But you should be legitimately worried about is revenue growth and accounting. They are too dependent on signing various contacts and recognising the revenue from those at various times (they call it licensing & collaboration), and its all over the place. It's really fucky accounting (like booking revenue from future cashflow) but it is legal. It's just no one can figure out wtf they are doing. For a company like them, their major source of revenue should be from sales, not from one-off cash payments from various "deals".

Going fundamental isn't looking at metrics
It really is looking into the business and try to get clues about growth catalysts

I tend to view value and growth plays as the 2 sides of the same coin

For example, GILD is a value play. It has shrinking revenues because its drugs are actually cures. But they are sitting on a big pile of cash which keeps on growing and their management has been good enough to make the right acquisitions, meaning GILD holds the potential to find the next blockbuster drug and generate growth.

AAXN is a typical growth play because they try to achieve double digits revenue growth each quarter. They may very well achieve a monopoly situation within the anglosphere police forces.

Yeah I know
Those conversions won't mean shit if AMRS delivers on their growth promise

Big5Guy pointed out that AMRS just keeps on failing to deliver and that is true. But past failures (and achievements) don't mean shit. You just have to believe on your DD.

As for the "deals" thing, I think papa Melo has no choice but to make them just to get cash and frankly, I respect him for sticking with AMRS and literally doing repeatedly the corporate equivalent of "sucking cocks for money".

Many companies wouldn't even have the chance to be offered those exotic means of financing.

100% spot on. I also lost money from LCI (but I don't blame big5cuck/planes/LCIguy or w/e his trip is now), but I didn't do as much fundamentals on them as I did with AMRS. desu doing your homework isn't about looking up ratios on finviz, or checking tute ownership or whatever, it's understanding what their business is about, what their strategic direction and vision is, and whether or not the relevant metrics that best reflect if they are achieving that. A company like AMRS missing EPS is absolutely irrelevant, what matters is revenue growth.

But sometimes the market doesn't act rationally, even if you've done all the work you can. In times of darkness, remember Buffet-sama's encouragement. The market in the short term is a popularity contest. In the long term its a weighing machine.

My reasoning is that I looked at their chart for the last 5 years and it was clear their entire run from 160-200+ was based on the perceived dominance of their iphone industry.

The day that they stopped releasing iPhone numbers and Kevin Oleary said he was completely out of Apple I said "it's going to go below 200". When I looked at the charts I felt it was going to go much lower.

People arent buying Apple at 200 because of their services, its cause of their phones and now the cat is out of the bag on the fact their phone sector is suffering, they are cruising for a correction.

Especially now with all this talk of the FAANGs getting decoupled I think Apple will be first to fall.

Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google will hang on (for now) because their valuation is based on their services and we already know what that is.

Apple "transitioning away from phones" is dangerous territory and worthy of a correction.

And quite frankly I use many Apple products (no phones though all iPads and macOS for work) but their abusive treatment of customers recently has been cruising for a drop in sentiment as well. In addition, a number of industries are still tied to Apple but are no longer enthused about them (although no more enthused about competitors, simply unenthusiastic about Apple).

Tldr; when they hid iPhone sales I knew a correction to a certain pre-hype level was due.

I can completely agree with that logic. When venture capitalists are assessing the value of start-ups, it really is just looking at the alternative fundamentals that they're forced to rely on in their market niche.

I know that landing contracts and deals is super fucking shady and reminiscent of Enron, but many fortune 500 companies rely on landing contracts as well.
For example, Amazon landing the JEDI contract for being the government's cloud provider was a huge deal. Banks landing deals like JPM helping out with Amazon's debit accounts and COF backing the credit cards for Walmart were also a very huge deal.

I wish I had done a put on PG&E. They were either going to recover or tank. I probably could have bought stock with a limit sell as a hedge and then done a big low put. I didnt though because I honestly thought they would recover, I didnt think CA would end up blaming them (because California is rife with crony capitalism) but it sounds like they are so they tanked really fucking hard. Could be a buying opportunity at some point here though because PG&E is a monopoly and not going anywhere. Even if the billions settlement payment was gonna bankrupt them CA will bail them out one way or the other. They're gonna let them sell bonds by raising consumer electric prices like 5$ a year per person.

Totally scummy and a real society would not allow this shit but CA is a social marxist neoliberal capitalist robber barons wet dream but par for the course.

But when forced asset sales happen, they will hardly get their desired price

It may interesting to own GE debts because debts are senior in case of liquidation

For example, if you can pay 10 cents for $1 of notional debt, it means you win if you can get $0.11 after the fire sales... You win if you can get at least 11% out of the fire sale of the assets, which is a risk worth taking

>desu doing your homework isn't about looking up ratios on finviz, or checking tute ownership or whatever, it's understanding what their business is about, what their strategic direction and vision is, and whether or not the relevant metrics that best reflect if they are achieving that.
I can agree with that, and I think LCI is what taught me that lesson the hard way. I'm starting to believe in statistics as a better basis than intuition for retail investors.
There were hedge funds with massive short positions on LCI before it halved -- I think retail investors simply don't have enough time or commitment to do proper DD like the hedge funds -- however, even the hedge funds typically don't beat the index in the long run.
For retail investors, I believe in statistics as a basis for investing much more than intuition or business acumen.

No one is smart enough to beat it, that's why they all say basically the same thing; "Buy and hold". Your next best option is as you already done a ETF/Fund mix and a few stocks. Sure you may get lucky and pick one stock that will return x4 or x10 what you invest in a short time but more often than not you'll end up losing.

IMO shorting nvda at this point is very dangerous. Their price has already corrected by a significant amount since highs of $280. It will take an absolutely disastrous ER to send it lower, and I look across the semi-reports this quarter and I don't think they will perform too badly.

Most of their financials released this week were poor. Aurora's were actually half decent, surprisingly. Canntrust's today were good. Canopy, Cron, and Tilray utterly shat the bed. Anyway, to answer your question, speculative money left the building when legalization became official, day and swing traders are working with the dregs, whole thing is fairly bearish until such time as another major M&A occurs or the next quarterly financials -which include recreational sales- are good.

As for where the speculative cash money went: USA weed startups and IPOs. Those are bearish too right now but I believe the correlation with Canadian tickers will weaken in coming months as US sets its own pre-federal legalization hype up routine and we do this whole bubble thing again.

thats because cephalopods are extraterrestrial in origin
(well, they can cause mutations in their RNA (and therefore DNA) at a rate of millions of mutations a generation, compared to humans puny rate of less than a half a generation)

humans have more in common (genetically) with the first multi-cellular animal ever (or corn, or seaweed, or simple single cell bacteria) than cephalopods have in common with their most recent evolutionary ancestor common ancestor

whether its from squid eggs landing on earth during the cambrian explosion, or because they edit their genetics all the time, we will never know

Facebook's reputation has suffered and people are turning away from ads and the aging platform as whole, Netflix will grow but also struggle with rising costs in licencing/creating original content, especially if Youtube ramps up their own services, Google & Amazon are the only one's I feel pretty comfortable with seeing as how well diversified they are, even with Google rep being hurt by that completely retarded HQ2 selection process and only time will tell if Dem will be going at them for taxes (doubtful though.)

The world is smaller than you think is a good rule of thumb when it comes to this area of the economy. Just follow /v/ with any kind of regularity and see what topics people are discussing and how their reactions are framed. Believe it or not, /v/ actually is fairly representative of "gamers" as a whole. The SJW sub-class of geek doesn't actually buy games, so it's almost self-filtering in that sense too. EA won't recover, ATVI probably will. Just need to hodl.

not even mentioning we dont know how they behave in the wild when octopusses form "cities" (thousands to millions of octopus sharing the same tiny habitat)
octopus know when they are being watched, by human divers, underwater drones, and plain old video cameras dropped nearby

thermal imaging from the surface shows that they tend to behave very differently when they are not being watched by us

they could be planning an invasion as we speak....

theyve been planning it for a while, but yea they arnt going to pull the trigger without a CFO

>If you have a few stocks with high volatility can you still make BIG BUX by just trading the same few companies? How diverse do you need to be?
you can but its highly unlikely
kind of like how the easiest way to get rich it to buy a winning lottery ticket. that doesnt mean its a good idea to try and do so

>Also do you get dividends if you buy a company just before they're due to pay? Is it feasible to keep a calendar of companies and just purchase before they pony up?
you have to own it before the ex-div date, and hold it past the record date

and you should know that stock price drops by the dividends amount on the day it pays out (in theory, taxes kind of give this a 1% error)

>part two

you are not the first person to have the idea of selling as soon as the div pays out

far from it

its not a bad idea long term, but dont expect to be le epic trader scoring a quick profit from buying a new div stock every day

I'm not looking up the meme but this is the definition of "I'm not even mad, that's amazing"

His crime wasn't the pump-n-dump, his crime was being small-time while doing it.

I’ve taken a look at the share structure of AMRS, and like many of you guys might feel overwhelmed, and to be honest, it’s quite a handful. In simple terms, AMRS needs capital to keep on going, in 2018 Q3, AMRS added about 5,230,500 additional common shares, and these additional common shares paid an avg. of $29.34 per share.

How I calculated it? The additional common shares is easy, but you need to look at the overall shareholder deficit to see how much changed and do a reconciliation. At 2017 Q4, overall shareholder deficit was $199,707 thousand and at 2018 Q3, overall shareholder deficit was $205,590 thousand. At 2018 Q3, AMRS saw a net overall loss to shareholders of $159,357 thousand, if we didn’t have the additional capital injected, overall deficit would rise to $359,064 thousand ($199,707 + $159,357 thousand); however, overall deficit at 2018 Q3 was $205,590 thousand, which meant that someone paid approx. $153,474 thousand in additional capital into the company and AMRS issued additional 5,230,500 shares which avg. $29.34 per share in value.

It’s also interesting that AMRS doesn’t capitalize their R&D anymore, in the past they did capitalize some of it and enough to make a material difference. I didn’t look too deep into any possibilities of a revaluation of intangible assets, but it is possible and this could change the overall balance sheet structure. However, as I mentioned in the past, any form of intangible asset revaluation, you need very strong evidence or correlation that all that R&D you spent on your tech, it really helped you to gain a huge market advantage and leads to profit.

Overall, I also looked at Big5Guy’s dilution and warrant comments, and I’ve read through most of the Series Preferred Stocks and Warrants, and many of it have an exercise price that wouldn’t dilute shareholder value, but there’s an anti-dilution clause that I am not 100% certain on, which means that, if AMRS issue shares at a lower price offering in the future, and lower than the person(s) who have the anti-dilution rights, then they average down their overall exercise share values. I believe this is only when AMRS actually provides some-form of secondary hybrid-capital/equity offering in the market that is below previous exercise prices.

As said, companies like this is burning through cash very fast, and requires more capital and issuing more common shares or acquire capital in order for it to continue.

My opinion is, it depends on the issued price per share when compared to market to determine if there’s any dilution impact. In the end, if shareholder deficit keeps increasing, share value will start declining significantly. It’s a risky stock that is very difficult to value, because it has never provided no profit what-so ever to shareholders, but sometimes you need to spend a lot of money to make a technology work, and sometimes the technology is worth it in a sense…. It can be life changing and can disturb many many markets in the future. You really can’t value this no matter what, it’s pretty much faith.

I think, the best indicator right now is revenue growth, as long as they meet the revenue growth targets, I don’t think it really matters if they have a continued net loss, as they can somehow make plans on how to be more efficient in the future because I think developing the technology right now is more important.

np, I am really busy with work, so I don't respond to any 4chan post during the day. After work, I spent approx 90 minutes reading through the 2017 annual report and 2018 Q3 results. I actually feel bad for their accountant(s) as their annual report is probably one of the biggest mess I've ever seen in my life.

p.s. I have CPA and CFA, but as you well know these are speculative investments, so finance designations provide little value or no use in any of this stuff due to so many risk factors here that are very difficult to predict. Their annual report further clarified all the risk factors for you guys to consider also.

I am just surprised that AMRS isn't doing someform of hedging on some of their vitamin E royalties or something if they could. I don't think there's a futures market for vitamin E, maybe OTC forward market?

Anyways, lets hope for the best.

I am actually looking forward to hear about their China deal and baby formula stuff in the coming year.
