Guys it's easy....

Say you think bitcoin is going to go up.

You borrow bitcoin at the current price and promise to give it back.
Say you're a maniac like OP. He buys bitcoin at 50x of what he puts in.
1 bitcoin in , now becomes 50 bitcoin
You don't actually own this bitcoin, you're borrowing it.
If the price goes up, you sell the bitcoin at a profit and you give back what you borrowed.
If it goes down, against what you bet would happen, you now owe the exchange the losses. The collateral is your 1 bitcoin.

You can also bitcoin going down. So you just reverse. You borrow bitcoin and sell straight away. Price goes down you make profit as you can buy back cheaper and repay. If it goes up you owe money.
