Return of the bull edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

Here's how NOT to lose money during this period of high volatility:
> Buy periodically, for example every month. If you can buy more often due to very low or no transaction fees, buy more frequently
> Buy a fixed $ amount every time (f.e. $1000 every month)
> Buy regardless of whether the market goes up or down, just do it every month
> Diversify, buy index ETFs (MSCI World is a good example)
> Put in additional capital (f.e. 1 month's worth) for every 10% drop
> Don't expect to get rich quick, have an investment horizon of at least 20 years
> NEVER SELL
> Apply the above rules for 90% of your portfolio
> Allow yourself 10% of your portfolio to do dumb shit like day trade, option gambling, meme stocks etc.

Retard with bond questions here.

>>11498585
>not unless the bond issuer defaults. if you buy a bond that you are planning on holding till expiration, you know exactly what you're getting (assuming no default). that's why bonds are known as fixed income assets

So if I don't sell the bond before the maturity date I'll get the same value I paid for it guaranteed?

>when people say "bond prices are going down" they mean that the bond you just bought at 4.95% is less cool than the new bond that came out today at 5.05%. if you sold a bond right after bond rates unexpectedly went up, you might end up selling at a lower price than you paid for it. this is why bond ETFs go down, because the managers are constantly buying and selling bonds rather than buying and holding till maturity

Lets take this bond as an example:
https://www.big.pt/OndeInvestir/Obrigacoes/Info/PTOTEQOE0015

That bond is currently trading at 124.12€ on Degiro. If I bought 10 bonds costing me 1241.2€ and held until maturity date would I get the 1241.2€ back on maturity? Do I get 5,65% on every coupon date? Even the next one on 2019-02-15?

> I'll get the same value I paid for it guaranteed?
>would I get the 1241.2€ back on maturity?
not necessarily. you'd get the amount the bond was originally issued for, which will be almost exactly how much you paid for it, but it might be more or less than you paid for it
>Do I get 5,65% on every coupon date?
no, that's the rate per year, which might be compounded multiple times per year depending on the bond. so if you got paid 4x per year, you'd get 1/4 of 5.65% per cupon date

Let me give you an example of a US note. When the US wants to issue a $1000 bond, they ask the market "will you loan me $1k for 10 years if I pay you 1% per year? No? How about 2% per year? No? 2.5% per year? Ok perfect thanks sold, you give me $1k, I give you the bond. You get 2.5% per year and $1k in 10 years."

If everything was static forever, that bond would always sell for $1k at the market. But things change and intrest rates have been going up. Lets say tomorrow, the US wants to issue a new bond but no one will buy it unless they get paid 3% per year. Then your bond is now worth less! If you bought your bond today once rates were at 3%, you'd probably only pay $950 for your old 2.5% bond, but you'd still get 2.5% of $1k per year and you'd still get $1k at the maturity date. What happened is that the price of your old bond decreased in the market until it still yields 3% per year just like the new bond (otherwise people would just buy the new bond instead). But the underling economics of the bond doesnt change, you still get paid 2.5% of $1k per year and get $1k at maturity.

Thank you, I believe I understood everything in your example. What I don't get however are specific bonds that I'm looking at on Degiro.

The following bond: http://en.boerse-frankfurt.de/bonds/portugal-_republikeo-obr_201324-Bond-2024-ptoteqoe0015

Looking at the price graph it seems the bond started trading at 100€, so I assume that's the value you'll get on maturity. Since it's trading at 124,12 it means that I'm paying over 20% of it's value, is this correct?

Why would I buy that over something like this one where the value is much closer to the initial value:

I'd say its value is what its trading at. Bond markets are pretty rational. What probably happened is that newer bonds have lower yields (intrest rates are declining in Portugal?) so the price of old bonds increased. You'll get more in intrest, but a smaller payout in the end.

The second bond you posted has a much smaller yield (5.65% vs 4.75%)

Assuming that the coupon rate is based on the initial bond value.

The 4.75% bond has a 14JUN19 maturity date, assuming I bought just one bond right now would that mean that I would pay 103,07€ for it and get 100€ + 4.75€ on maturity next year? (about 1.68€ or 1.7% profit)

The 5.65% on has a maturity date of 15FEB24, if I bought just one bond now for 124.12€ would that mean I would get 5.65€ per year and 100€ + 5.65€ on maturity. (about 5.65€ * 6 - 24.12 = 9.78€ or 9.78% profit)

The profit difference is what's confusing to me here, but I'm probably fucking something up in the calculations.

Assuming I'm expecting interest rates to increase in the near future and I wanted to invest in bonds now, I should probably buy short term bonds so they mature just in time for the new bonds with the increased interest rates taken into account, correct?

"It' different this time!"

>> No.11500960

I was only a STEMlord

I loved Elon so much, I had all the hats and flamethrowers

I pray to Elon every night before bed, thanking him for being the ultimate human

"Elon is love" I say; "Elon is life"

My dad hears me and calls me a faggot

I know he was just jealous of Elon’s wealth

I called him a short seller

He slaps me and gives me books about how car manufacturing should work

I'm crying now, and my face hurts

I lay in bed and it's really cold

Suddenly, a warmth is moving towards me

It's Elon

I am so happy

He whispers into my ear "The shorts took my wife again."

He grabs me with his powerful genius hands, dirty after his 120 hour shifts and puts me down onto my hands and knees

I'm ready

I spread my ass-cheeks for Elon

He penetrates my butt-hole

It hurts so much but I do it for Elon

I can feel my butt tearing as my eyes start to water

I push against his force

I want to please Elon

He roars in a mighty roar as he fills my butt with his love

My dad walks in

Elon looks him straight in the eyes and says "Sorry pedo guy”

Elon leaps out the window, tries to land into his Tesla, and fucks up the landing, before screeching about fake news

Elon is love. Elon is life.

>Makes sense, thanks man. So it seems picking any bond will most likely yield about the same returns as of the time of purchase.
Close. Bonds issued from the same entity expiring at the same day will will be priced the same. Typically, investors want more intrest if the bond term is longer, especially if there is risk of increasing rates. So a bond expiring in 5 years will probably have a higher yield than a bond expiring in 1 year.

>Assuming I'm expecting interest rates to increase in the near future and I wanted to invest in bonds now, I should probably buy short term bonds so they mature just in time for the new bonds with the increased interest rates taken into account, correct?
Yes. However, note that many bond yields are nearing inversion, meaning that yields for 30 year bonds are about the same as yields for 2 year bonds. This basically means that investors expect intrest rates will remain low for 30 years and want to "lock in" todays "high" rates for the next 30 years.

AT&T has a huge presence all throughout the country and unlike Comcast, it's pushing cheap, symmetrical gigabit fiber in just about every city it operates. Where I live, I've seen nothing but AT&T crews working day and night, and I live in one of the most populated cities in the country (the world, too). I'm pretty sure they're installing fiber cables underground.

With that much work and expansion being done, there's no way Comcast isn't going to take a huge hit.

I have garbage, overpriced internet quality from AT&T, though they claim to be planning for fiber in my town in the next few years. Comcast can take a hit or whatever, that's also garbage. Verizon is the only ISP that isn't 100% hot garbage from my experience living in the south, DC, west coast, PNW, and now midwest.

that's a huge question, and it's a great question that taxpayers should be asking themselves more.

i got free tuition to rutgers and went to some really exceptional schools (though that has more to do with property taxes). parleyed my education into a great job. we have what i would say are pretty effective social services and infrastructure, though seemingly declining because it's not keeping up with traffic increases. we have serious deficits in mass transit. there's a lot here, in the sense of infrastructure that allows industry to flourish in a tight space with big business. cutting edge hospitals and medical research. rutgers is a "public ivy" and you wouldn't believe how many asians pay enormous amounts in international tuition to study here.

i don't know where you live but from what i've read about other states, the social servants are getting starved out. like teachers in kansas need 2-3 jobs to survive and shit. but for all i know, my teachers had 2-3 jobs too.

Hello.
I just really got my first real job after I graduating college so I finally have a decent amount of money to invest. I am looking very very long term so I don't mind buying now even though it may seem like we're on the brink of a market crash and dollar cost averaging each month as I make more money at work.
I'm mainly interested in buying total fund ETFs, maybe like a 40 40 10 10 split between VTI, VXUS, BND, VGIT respectively. I will also be buying smaller amount of individual stocks on the side. My main question was in which accounts do I allocate what? I have both a regular margin/brokerage account, as well as a Roth IRA.
On the one hand it makes more sense to me that for the tax savings, these funds have such low fees I should keep them in my brokerage account and keep stocks in the IRA. On the other hand, everyone calls IRA a retirement account, and since I'm thinking long term with these funds should I just stick them there and forget?
Thank you.

roth IRAs get your least tax-efficient investments. you don't pay taxes on dividends or capital gains in the roth IRA, so profit is profit, taxed at 0%. for retirement accounts i would put stuff like REITs, junk bonds, other high-yield investments.

traditional accounts get everything else.

i wouldn't overthink it. i'd put stocks and bonds with high dividend yields in the roth IRA, and any tax-advantaged funds (like my municipal bonds) in the regular account. but more importantly i would pursue an investing approach that emphasizes simplicity. like why bother with VTI, VXUS, BND when you could do a target-date fund, most of which attempt the same logic at the same ratios, in one fund. putting VTSAX in both accounts is probably just fine unless that bores you. and that's a minimal cost approach, too.
