Bears on suicide watch edition.

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

I've checked martin shrekli valuating AAPL and from his numbers he doesn't see much growth in their stock prices as the market already has them well evaluated. Unless you expect them to have any true new products and not rehashes of the same shit.
I forgot if its AI or iCar they're trying to get into for the future but many others in the market have a headstart already

I work in advertising. Name of the game is user growth. Instagram has superior technical infrastructure, and they have a propensity for copying SNAP's ideas.

Thus over time Instagram will thrive off of Facebook's infrastructure, while SNAP simultaneously has to raise money, outgrow, and out think instagram.

Long turn growth looks much more like twitter or pinterest than a real FB killer.

I'm really curious, what do you guys actually use as your trading strategy?

I just keep a list of "good" companies, and whenever I see a technical weakness (like low RSI or something) I'll buy a position on them, and I will hold them until my price target is hit, which is usually 10%, then I sell half and put the rest on a trailing sl.

I NEVER short, I don't even keep a list of "bad" companies. Yes there have been times where I caught a falling knife, and yes there have been times where I sold halfway up a pump. But since every trade I make is profit (I hold the unrealized losses, and there are a few big bags I'm still holding). But year to date I'm still up a nice 20% even accounting for the unrealized losses. Seems to work for me.

I find it comfy, personally
I make sure to do my research on the stocks I buy before I open a position, and fundamentals are much more important to me than TA when making a decision to buy or not
I think that when it comes to position trading, you should only use TA sparingly to refine your entry point, and just hold as long as you're confident in the company's fundamentals

I personally like to buy biotech companies, because I understand to some degree what separates a good biotech company from a bad one
It's both more speculative and more objective than other sectors of the stock market
The long-term viability of a company is determined by the science supporting its drugs, which as close to objectivity as you can get, but the short term price action is volatile because scientific catalysts are very important and people tend to overreact to news either way

yea only hold companies that you understand, and youll also do better when they are companies that you know well (if you work at ford, you will probably be able to read through the bs from most car companies for example, or pro-gamers may know which game company is a better long term trend because they know the target customer better)
getting market related news in that field/sector throughout the week will help you pick good stocks to hold better than any financial broker's general advice

How do you even know about fundamentals of biotechs? The science is far too complex for anyone without a indepth background, and even then predicting trials result is almost impossible.

As far as I can tell, there is no "fundamental" with biotechs since its basically a gamble. It's not like you can look at their p/e or whatever since they are all losing money and that's perfectly normal.

The validity of the science is determined by previous clinical study and trial results
The more results are in its favor, the more confident you can be in the science's validity, even if you don't know anything about how it works
I would argue that biotechs are no more of a gamble than any other sector of the stock market, since no matter what sector of the market you're in, you can't really predict everything

I'm way too early in my education to say I really know anything in depth (I'm a 20 year old undergraduate), but I'm majoring in Neuroscience, and I eventually want to become a Neuroscientist

I'll use VTGN as an example
VTGN is making a drug called AV-101 to treat depression and neuropathic pain
AV-101 acts on the same neurological pathway in the same way as ketamine (they're both NMDA antagonists), and ketamine has been shown to been very effective in treating both treatment-resistant depression and neuropathic pain
AV-101 has performed well in clinical trials, and has received FDA fast track status twice since December 2017 for both depression and neuropathic pain

So by seeing that they are working with a neurological pathway that has been well studied and that the drug is working in a similar fashion as a drug that is already in the market, regardless of the FDA fast track you can say they've already got this in the bag. Don't FDA want you to do like atleast 5 years clinical trials?(I'm pulling a number out my ass but I know its suppose to be long).
So with it fast tracked you can see it coming to market in the near future? How ahead do you estimate?
Aswell with a drug like this do you expect it, since being the new shit, doctors will jump to start pushing this on patients over current market alternatives?

Itchy trigger fingers. Everyone is worried about a possible dump on or the day after Wednesday. Today the markets were bouncing so I imagine there was movement out of pot stocks and in to other stuff. Also short entries on the dude weed due to sell off suspicions.

I expect further volatility tomorrow, panic selling if bears are successful in sniping stop losses, but also potential short squeeze if there is big news. It's tricky. I wouldn't be holding shit in this sector right now if not for my Canopy Rivers position. The RIV position technically still makes sense despite whatever the sector may or may not do tomorrow/Thursday/Friday. RIV could easily do a triple bottom at $5.30 tomorrow if the bears have control.

It is true that drugs can't treat depression completely on their own, but they do play a valid role in easing the patient's symptoms enough for them to pursue other methods of treatment
Depression is caused by very real and tangible neurological imbalances, and if there's severe enough that someone is in a psych ward immediately following a suicide attempt or other treatments haven't worked (treatment-resistant depression), then you won't be able to make any progress until their symptoms are eased enough for them to be able to function
Ketamine (and potentially AV-101) is used in those circumstances, when it's dangerous to not address the issue immediately, and when other treatments haven't worked
For most run-of-the-mill cases of depression, patients are treated with no drugs at all or with SSRIs

who cares how long it takes, clinical trials are when the best money is made

>Aswell with a drug like this do you expect it, since being the new shit, doctors will jump to start pushing this on patients over current market alternatives?

Yeah most docs aren't pushing ketamine since that requires non-oral dosing, far more thought put into the dosing, and intermittent use. Also it's scheduled, which means getting a license from the DEA. I personally think this is a silly drug, and there is absolutely no reason to believe it will be superior to ketamine (or CA channel blockers in the case of neuropathic pain). But most physicians are morons with a pathetic understanding of physiology and pharmacology, so they will eat up the marketing.

>Side note I don't believe in these kind of drugs and I honestly think they do more damage to the patient then good. No offense to your profession
I sympathize with you here. They do not do more "damage" to the patients, but they are mostly unnecessarily as beyond the top 1-5% of depressed individuals. Exercise and a proper social life are all one really needs. Society structurally can make it difficult for certain individuals to get the latter part of that, hence the giant antidepressant market. On top of that, therapy is more financially restrictive than pills, and worldwide people are more and more falling into the trap that there can be a magic cure-all for particular disorders.

I do esoteric reward research at a level not valuable to pharma companies and my grant funding is mostly for addiction/obesity, so no offense taken.

If you wageslave even the worst minimum wage job and can only save $300 per month, and do that for 30 years with an average of 10% return per year, then you can retire with half a million dollars. Get a high dividend yielding portfolio and you can live off 50k a year for retirement

I've been shilling GALT on here since August (it became a meme specifically because of me posting about it repeatedly)
It's had a rough month in terms of price action, but the science supporting it and the company's finances are still good
They're making a drug for NASH cirrhosis and melanoma/head and neck cancer that works by inhibiting galectin-3
Their drug has showed promising results both in NASH (prevents the formation of esophageal varices, a potentially lethal complication in late-stage NASH, in people who don't have them), and in cancer (boosted the response rate of Keytruda, a drug very commonly used in the treatment of melanoma, by 15%)

This is just sad. A lot of people poorer than me call me stingy and a Jew for living frugally. Like not going out for dinners or buying big on discounts and not buying clothes when I don't need. Basically I don't impulse buy or spend on things I don't need. It doesn't make sense to me how they can spend there money on useless shit especially when they're poorer than me. I see it now atleast.
You'd just think they'd realise the value of money just buy the position they're in

I gleamed some people talking about retiring on like 8-10% or some shit. It don't work that way. When you actually go to retire you work on 4-6% Markets go down and it has to go up more than it went down to reach parity, plus on down years you still have to spend money. If you want to calculate how much you need for retirement you need to be realistic and not pretend your gonna suddenly become the worlds smartest investor 60-95. Savings rate beats higher returns. Don't pretend your gonna make crazy returns, resolve to have a crazy savings rate, that you can control. Those are my numbers if I just piddled around and they are still fairly unrealistic cause I put in a 5% return instead of 4%.

You two are missing the findings. People are more likely to act in the stupid 'buy sneakers now, save never' way by the way our brains are wired to react to scarcity.

These people may be (an often are) undeserving ingrates, but at least a portion of the tunnel vision part of poverty is morally blameless
