Im using a demo account and I see they listed overnight funding as well as leverage on the VTI(vanguard total market). I just bought it for fun now and reading the position it shows 0,000 under overnight funding so I'm guessing there is none on that. Did you buy it on margin?
If your balance drops below your maintenance margin you get margin called which I assume is just liquidation in paper trading. In a real account, the broker asks you to deposit funds to meet your maintenance. If you can’t, it sells off.
All that other shit is irrelevant. When you buy something like VTI with cash, you can hold it as long as you want, to the moon or to zero, the only cost associated with that is the fund’s overhead and that is factored into the share price/dividends.
If you use margin or leverage, you need to account for that. Most people don’t use it with their retirements though.
