From 2009 to 2015, deficit has always shrinked. Sure, it was high, but the US was barely recovering from 2008, and the deficit was shrinking every year because deficit spending wasn't needed anymore. In 2015, unemployement was already around 4%, which is pretty healthy for an economy.
Then Trump arrived. Now, deficit is rising every year (400 billions in 2015, 500 in 2016, 650 in 2017 and now 850 in 2018), since unemployement was already low now inflation is up to 3%. Trump is doing exactly what Greeks did in the years prior to 2008.
And now the stocks went up to their ATH only to blow up yesterday because the FED is doing its job.

Also, as long as deficit was shrinking, the US treasury could print low-rates bonds : after all, they needed less paper money to keep shit running every year. Now that it's spending time again, they need to print bonds with higher rates to keep money flowing. Therefore, the banks who had their money in stocks realize it's more profitable to buy US debt, and dump their stocks to buy more.
