I'm mildly pissed off about how today when. All my fault, too. Harvest One Cannabis (HVT) broke above bull flag this morning and I was well positioned for it. Set trailing stop loss as I normally do, only a hair closer than normal because HVT is a shit stock and their financials suck hard, meaning pump n' dump likely. Anyway, the stock retraces down to exactly the price of my stop loss, trips, position flushed, proceeds to close +30%. Fug. Now... I can't be too mad as that trade was already well in the green for me and I did still make a couple grand off it. But fug anyway. It'll probably keep going tomorrow cause the dude weed gonna dude weed.

Even if you assume you cannot win in the sense of realizing greater percentage returns than investment firms, that's not really the goal of stock trading. Your goal as an independent retail investor is to make money for yourself. The question is more, are you better off with ETFs and mutual funds than you are trading individual tickers? You absolutely can make money as an independent day trading or swing trading or value investing. You also can, without a great deal of trouble so long as you're not terrible, beat the market indices.

Understanding a company's fundamentals (what it actually does and its overall financial health), any relevant news, where its price is relative to its overall trend (if a stock costs $100 and the highest it's been in the last year is $102, you might want to wait a bit for it to go down before you buy in if there isn't any apparent reason why it would go up higher than that)

There is a new ticker on the CSE I'm looking closely at. Charlotte's Web Holdings Inc. Cutesy name. Serious company. Maybe. MCap of $258m, only 15m shares out in the market. It ran pretty hard since listing on September 7th and is now in consolidation range (high volatility). They are involved in the CBD supplement sector and run mainly out of Colorado.

NR from their listing day is here:
https://web.tmxmoney.com/article.php?newsid=5894350791265741&qm_symbol=CWEB:CNX

I'm bullish on this because the US Farm Bill has been overlooked as a major cash generator for hemp growers. CWEB is well positioned to take advantage.

No position currently. Waiting for clearer buy signals on the chart.

that's my point, I'm sure barely any retail trader breaks out even at the end of the year, surely the ones even able to make a living are the ones with MBAs or the people at the banks, this is of course assuming you're just not throwing your money in sp or the jones or you got lucky that one time which paid for the subsequent year-long bear attack on your folio.

Today was a good day. Steady growth, little by little.

Not sure if I should buy more shares of SPYG or invest in other sectors like foodservice (which is a field I currently wageslave in). Sysco is down right now but it's basically the default for all restaurants and small operations for the foreseeable future, I can see it growing another 20%+ over the next 3-5 years.

>> No.11057825

sorry for such a newbie question, but after looking it up i'm still unsure. it seems that stocks/EFT are something you buy for long term, year long investing, while options are stocks you buy to sell within the week/month? Is that accurate? Do most of you basically just trade in options? Is there even any reason to buy a plain stock other than long term investment?

>it seems that stocks/EFT are something you buy for long term, year long investing, while options are stocks you buy to sell within the week/month? Is that accurate?

No. Day and swing trading is done with common shares (regular stock), too. Options are for getting more leverage on your position or hedging to limit your risk exposure. They are high risk to trade and not recommended for beginners.

>> No.11057950

>>11057882
You're risking so little that the dollar gain from SPYG isn't really worthwhile desu. Yes you get it at less risk but with just $100 why not live a little and get some leverage. It isn't bad in itself. Just in your portfolio
IMO you should add to everything so AMD doesn't influence the port so much or just sell some. I can see it in your chart. RH should tell you how much of the port it is as a %

Not exactly. Frequent day trading is not allowed on Robinhood (without the designation- see Robinhood rules re; pattern day trading) but you can day trade all you like with any other brokerage. And just to clarify here, a 'day trade' is defined as buying in the morning and selling some time before market close in the afternoon; all same day.

No. "Expensive" is mostly meaningless on the stock market in the sense you mean of price per share vs. price for options. So long as you can afford one share of a company, you can trade it. If you can't afford a single share of a company you definitely shouldn't be trying to options trade the same company unless you know what you're doing.

Calls are when you think stocks will go up, puts are when you think they will go down.
Strike price is the price you think the stock will reach. The riskier a call/put is (ie: higher call strike/lower put strike and short expiration) the cheaper it is to buy. The closer the strike price is and the further away expiration is, the more expensive the option is to buy.
Basically, high risk = cheap, low risk = expensive. Also there's a time decay.

Sucker here. I don't think it's the day. I think it has more to do with waiting until everyone is talking about something, like the cable people. It seems like when they're shilling a stock the window has closed.
I watch about twenty stocks daily, then take a look at whatever people argue about here. I have $125 in an account that I use strictly to gamble and learn. Only up a single dollar, but that's okay because I have a Janus fund, a deferred comp plan, and a state retirement plan. If I live long enough Imy last few years should be comfy with lots of hunting, fishing, and pot growing/smoking.

You're only up a single dollar because you fall for the robinhood meme and only play nasdaq stocks because thats what you are limited to..
