Thoughtful Thursday Edition

We're almost there...

Icebreaker: How has your perspective of things/the world in general changed as you've gotten older?

For example take this cutaway from Spongebob. Once an afterthought, it's now a sad reality I'm living every day.

Not only are we almost there, but it's a 3 day weekend!

Perspective: Everything is awful, but I was on gif last night and saw a couple of flavela gifs and was thankful to live in America where my only worries are eating enough protein to maintain gains and if my tinder/bumble dates are going to text me back after the first date.

Oh, and crypto is down again. Gonna wait until it dips a tiny bit lower, because I've now met my savings goals for the year.

These last two years I've become increasingly bitter and cynical towards everything. The crypto bull run from May until the beginning of January was kind of making me hopeful for the future but this drawn out bear market since February has made me even more bitter than I was before (not only the bear market, but also other shit in my life). I've kind of accepted that this absurd universe hates me and it just conspires against me and it fucking teases me with false hopes and dreams. I'm going to form a fucking black metal band.

Well, not everyone can engage in FIRE or else who would be working?

By the way, what do you guys think about bullshit jobs (i.e. jobs that if they didn't exist wouldn't make the world any worse)? The more I think about it, the more I conclude that:
- They're a kind of UBI (Universal Basic Income) to keep the masses passive and put some fucking food in their tables;
- They're a kind of a device for humiliation by the psycopathic socio-economic elite that pervades this fucking world. Think for example about all the startups in SV. VCs are basically psychopaths that "invest" in startups (more like gambling) which make shitty apps/web services (granted that there's some good stuff but Sturgeon's law and all that) and relish in seeing the techie drones living in a deplorable and literal shithole filled with shit in the streets.

I'm 25 in a couple months, been working in mind numbing retail jobs since I turned 20.

I started a website a few weeks back. Finally got Adsense up on there, and have made so far, from Amazon Associates and ads, £7.23. It's only gonna go up though. I've written 14 articles since I started, totalling 22.8k words. Last 2 articles were 4.2k and 5.1k each.

Been aggressively marketing on social medias to get attention, and I got lucky with one post on Reddit that kind of blew up, but only brought me some decent traffic for a day, but a Pinterest Pin I made is bringing in steady visitors.

I am putting all my spare time into this, cause I want to be able to quit my job, and support my future family. I also want to do shit like hike the Appalachian trail, but it's so damn expensive when you work an almost minimum wage job.

At least my website will give me passive income.

I got the gist of it. My partner and I already scrimp a lot when it comes to cash. We're both still living at her parents house, as we're saving money for a mortgage on a house. We've been saving roughly 40% of our paychecks each just for that, so the saving extra part isn't new to us either.

I don't want to have to save for years and years and live off savings, I'd rather gain a steady passive income, that I can couple with that to gain FIRE. But I do understand the concept now.

I just really hate my job.

They say don't make what you love into a job, but I do, and I still love it.

Thanks man, to get the ball rolling you don't even need that much, depends on which jurisdiction you're trying to go for. Around 35k USD I'd say is solid for most mid level tax havens, not talking about moving to some tiny island either. Many of the carribean and Latin American tax havens have gotten a bad wrap since the Panama papers came out, many places just don't accept bank wires from these countries any more or they do extremely thurough due diligence for compliance even tho they have a very solid reputation and institutions with good track records, talking about places like BVI or cayman Islands where about 85% of the words hedge funds are incorporated. Now its all about low tax on shore jurisdictions like lietchenstien, Luxembourg, quatar or even macau but things are always changing, gotta be dynamic and ready to move if need be so its an interesting life

SO and parents know and are fully onboard and supportive.

I've told my best friend roommate from college and he seemed receptive too. Everyone else, no. I'd rather not deal with the "Oh what will you do with your time? What a waste of education and your prime working year" and of course the seething jealousy and anger that they've locked themselves into a cycle of perpetual debt and refuse to change their ways.

Overall, best to keep things for yourself. When I hit FI I'm telling people I'm a consultant and portfolio manager at a private hedge fund (my own of course).

That'll be the beauty of it. You'll have the rest of your life to figure that out and find what makes you happy and not be slaving in the rat race. Above money, FI is about finding happiness.

Do you guys really think people enjoy going into work? I'm a bar tender and the job is pretty chill for the most part. I can drink on the job, talk to cool people and walk out with cash once I'm done with my shift. There are days where I'm really busy and I'm run back and forth. It can get stressful to the point where I want to kill myself.

I feel like everyone goes through these thoughts though. I mean I feel like once I finish my finance degree, I'll have days where I sit in the office and just think of ways to kill everyone and myself.
Do people really enjoy what they do with there life or is everyone just faking it and working to make it by in life?

It's not a terrible idea to add some diversity with international stocks, but I don't think it's essential. You'll miss out on gains during times when the US market is far outperforming the rest of the world, but you'll have a smoother ride during times when the US markets are down and other markets are doing better. Many of the companies within VTSAX are companies with international reach and are influential in many other markets outside of the US, so you're inherently already investing a good bit into the international indexes by holding VTSAX

Either one is a good option. Like I said I think you can go either way on VTSAX alone vs. VTSAX/VTIAX split.

How old are you and what is your risk tolerance? That will determine what percentages you should be allocating to stocks vs. bonds.

>I plan to maintain this ratio forever
You shouldn't. You should be re-balancing as you get closer to retirement and move from wealth accumulation to wealth preservation.

>I'm guessing more bonds?
Yup, bonds are less growth/less volatile meaning as you add more your growth will slow down but you'll be less exposed to market fluctuations/recessions. This becomes more important as you get closer to retirement and want to start withdrawing your gains and don't want any serious dips to mess with that.

I personally don't plan on having any bonds in my portfolio until I'm at least 40, but my risk tolerance is quite high and any money that I invest I have no plans on touching for several decades. I'm ready to ride the ups and downs. However I know this strategy isn't for everyone. The more popular approach is to start at 90/10 while you're in your 20s and early 30s, move to 75/25 once you're mid career, and move to 60/40 once you're getting close to actually retiring. This with the first/higher percentage being the stocks.

Do a target retirement date fund then. It'll cost you a tiny bit more in the form of a slightly higher expense ratio, but it'll save you the work of any manual re-balancing.

You're kneecapping yourself if you don't take advantage of tax advantaged accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs (both traditional and Roth).

And if you save a decent amount, you'll soon run out of tax advantaged space in those accounts. That's when you open up a normal, non-tax-advantaged brokerage account with Vanguard.

It took me about a week or two of working on a data manipulation heavy project to get familiar with the general tidyverse libraries which will be your bread and butter for data manipulation since it beats the shit out of base R.

I was an Economics major in college & took a relatively Econometrics heavy course load so I had decent background in regression analysis and statistical methods. That said, my professional experience with data manipulation in SQL & Excel played a larger role in how quickly I was able to pick up the language. R's dataframes are essentially just spreadsheets that you manipulate with code instead of cell specific formulas.

Even in the most Atlas-Shrugged socialist takeover fantasy, a 401(k) is more trustworthy than a straight up brokerage account.

You also can touch IRA money before you're 60, both through qualified withdrawals (e.g. house purchase), withdrawals of contributions, and 72(t) withdrawals.

Please do not fuck yourself out of thousands of dollars. It's disgusting to watch.

Nope. Look up SEPP/Section 72(t), Roth IRA Ladder, etc.

You can also withdraw Roth IRA contributions whenever you want penalty free. You just can't withdraw the earnings.

In a bullshit position where I either drop all my classes or I can become a supervisor but at home depot. I am studying construction tech.

Its more money, but I am good with money and have savings- I feel like its forcing me into a choice that's unnecessary but their making it a linchpin. Gives me a bad feeling.

So, I can make a max of $15/hour until they maybe promote me to a position that has salary (years away I bet), or I push on through school, get out in a year or two and make more either with an aas or trade cert.

>Attended college finished most of my cores for bachelors (I might decide to go full bachelors for construction but not until that would make sense.)
