Shorting is stupid. If enough people short something, they push the price up. You're not just guessing at the timing of a crash, you're creating an influence that reduces the likelihood of a prompt crash, and depending on other people not to do the same thing you're doing.

Why? Because shorting involves agreeing to buy the security at a later date, no matter how high the price is. That's a guaranteed future demand for it, a reason for people to buy into it now.

People talk about shorting as a generalized way to make money from knowing something is a bad investment that's going to crash, but it isn't. It's an extremely risky maneuver, where you can be right, but if the market agrees with you, you lose your shirt.

Generally, the only reliable profit you can get from knowing a security is going down is to get out of it, and be safe from losing money when it collapses.

Why hasn't it crashed yet? Because it started obscure and the player base kept growing. In 2017, all the normies learned about it, everyone who would get in, got in, and it peaked. Now it's in clear decline, and there are no new people to discover it, misunderstand it, and be irrationally excited about it. It's never going back to a generally upward trend again. At best, it might fluctuate upward very temporarily, and you know how bitcoin works: when everyone starts trying to sell, the system gets clogged up and you can't transact. You're never going to sell the peak on this downward-trending roller coaster.

It's never going to hit $10k again. It is going to hit $1k again. Then $100. Then $10. Then $1. Then $0.
