If you short one btc at 10k you basically get 10k. once btc drops to lets say 5k that's when you have to pay back 1btc which will cost you 5k. thus you now have 5k profit. You don't keep the thing you're shorting you cash it out and buy back at a later time to pay back. you're betting that when you need to pay back the buy in is significantly lower.
