Once the ASIC miners took over it was impossible to force them to update the network to make themselves obsolete. This caused many forks eventually leading to Zcash consolidating the best and most Dev's from the BTC space.

Zcash has a future because it integrates with Ethereum to allow anonymous payments within smart contracts. BTC will get killed by china or it will get completely wrapped into Ethereum and die that way. The wrapping has already begun =P
