CNBC shills just made a REALLY FUCKING GOOD POINT despite it probably not being the point they intend to make.
It is true that there are large institutional investors holding GME like Vanguard who have lent their shares out to hedgies like Melvin to make money from the shorting. It is true they could demand their shares back and try to sell...
HOWEVER, they're RETIREMENT FUNDS. Letting the shorts never close might actually work in their benefit. They can exponentially grow their retirement funds from the interest payments due to Melvin and friends shorting 250% of the float. They are guaranteed those payments as a lender.

That means they could hold their shares, AND THEN:
* let ALL retail investors sell first and literally name their price to the shorties
* wait for Melvin to short attack again and buy the dip, taking control of 100% of the float
*CHARGE THE SHORTIES INFINITE INTEREST FOREVER, BECAUSE THEY CAN ONLY SELL BACK TO THE INSTITUTIONS THEY ALREEADY BORROWED FROM, THEREBY FUNDING EVERYONES RETIREMENT ACCOUNT AND MAKING THEIR CEOS TRILLIONS INTO THE FUTURE AS THE SHORTIES BECOME A PERMANENT MONEY MACHINE

I do not think there is any serious chance of this happening, but the fact that it is an real option this timeline could take is insane to think about. Hedgies could become permanent money printers for everyone's retirement accounts AND all the retailers win if the institutions decide its time to get based for once.

This is not investment advice.
