Forgot to mention, watch out for rubber! The vulcanisation process adds sulfide to rubber and it will react with silver to form Ag2S. So remove any rubber bands unless you want to turn your stack in pic related

No, the black tarnish is silver sulfide (Ag2S) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_sulfide . Sulfide is found when you burn stuff, like petrol. Both moisture and high temperature increase the speed of chemical reactions, that why you want to remove both.

That is why electrolysis works on tarnished silver, you turn Ag2S -> 2Ag + S. So basically silver sulfide back to silver and sulfide
