The whole thing can be done with self hosted or regular crypto-paid servers storing and exchanging PGP messages. Users are identified with a PGP key, server can trustlessly store and forward encrypted and signed messages. That means you are not bound to a single server like email. Your address can include your home servers, or you can push a signed message to server indicating your server, so this gets added to a directory of users. Hell, you can simply just register a domain and point it to whatever server you're using. They should work with ENS too. Boom! Here you go, I designed a better system in 2 minutes.
