He never said it wouldn't be profitable, he said in order for it to be profitable it needs to be able to think and invest long term and if it's publicly traded there will be much more pressure to pump out superficially nice looking numbers every quarter instead of taking their time to do it right. There are still tons of angel investors giving money to SpaceX, do you really think they would be doing that if Elon was straight up saying that SpaceX was never going to be a profitable venture?
