I've been told by people that Inferno is considered canon. Also that the sunlit rose at the end of Paradiso is Christ, Mary, paradise, and death (suffering/martyrdom) as the image of the rose. At the end of paradise is a single sunlit rose. Its leaves are the saints, its blooming flower (aka the highest "person" in the pantheon is Mary) what nourishes the rose? The Sun - God - the Holy Trinity. Dante mustically reveals true reality as the image of a rose lit by the Sun
The rose before the fall of man had no thorns, in paradise the rose is returned to its true state
