I don't understand taxes. I make about 55k USD a year and I live in massachusetts. Last year I was a student and I went from making about 15k at a shitty part time job to making 55k at my current job. I noticed that last year I got back money for my federal and state taxes. This year, I OWE the state of massachusetts like 1300 dollars or something.

How the fuck do taxes work? I don't mind paying the number but I honestly don't know what the fuck is going on. Should I have an account do my taxes? I am only one person. I fucking hate tax season too. Last year I was lucky enough that my dad said his accountant would do my taxes as a favor. I imagine because last year my taxes would probably be easy? This year I went to a different accountant and his fees are like 500 USD. Which seems steep. I could be getting ripped off but I just want this shit over with. Next year I will learn how to do it myself I guess. Fucking hell.

Is this why they call us "Taxachusetts"?
