I would like to add that platinum is the skeleton key of organic chemistry. A catalyst that does not degrade, it's literally like a magic wand from harry potter(it starts reactions without being part of them).

South african plat typically costs ~950$ per oz to procure, this is because the mining is hazardous and the refining process is complex. They have to send 21st century slaves down the mineshafts by hand. Meanwhile Russia mines silver in an open-pit, leading to much easier/cheaper supply (~350$/oz), however the Russian supply is dwindling and all Russian sources are currently banned due to the Ukraine conflict.

Crust rarity estimates put it at about the same rarity as gold, but the production is 1/30th(172 vs. 3100 tonnes - 2016), and it does not have the mining history of gold.
